Help with drying mushrooms??
    #21268092 - 02/13/15 08:58 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys I'm about to do my very first harvest. How would I dry these mushrooms. I have a bag of 50 dessicent packets... Would that even work? I could use my oven but I wouldn't have that much time and I don't wanna stink up my house. Thanks for the help guys!!!

I recommend picking up a dehydrator from Walmart or an online market like kijiji or Craigslist.  If this is your only planned harvest,  then you can lay them on paper towel in front of a fan for a few days.  Never put fresh shrooms in a desiccant chamber

Yeah I was hoping to harvest within a few hours. I don't have a small fan. Could i set it out on a table and turn on my ceiling fan? My ceiling fan causes quite abit of air circulation

I don't have dessicent powder for that though :L I have those food packets. Would they work for that type of drying? Should I take the dessicent out of the packets?

You need to dry them with a fan first. Desiccant is only for the final part of getting them cracker dry. I would empty out the packets if that's all you have.

Okay cool. when the dessicent is wet would I be able to dry it in the oven? also should I harvest them all at once when most of the veils break or harvest them all when the first few veils break or one at a time as the veils break away.

You can re-activate it in the oven yes, Google it. Harvest when or right before the veil breaks.

My very first veil just broke so do I wait a while longer until the other veils break?

Pick whenever you want, but on cakes I would pick them individually as they matured.

Well I crumbled up a cake and cased it. A lot of the mushrooms are all connected to each other in these clusters

Up to you dude. It's not going to hurt anything if you don't harvest right away. Spores might drop and make a mess, but that's about it. After the veil breaks there is no more increase of potency with the extra weight = have to eat more to have same effects as picking right before/after veil breaks.

Hmm, I would LOVE to get myself a dehydrator but they are a bit pricey so that will have to wait.

I have been using silica gel pellets. They change colour when saturated as well.
I have put them in the desiccant chamber before straight after picking them and it does work and dry them but it takes a while longer and it chows through the silica like crazy. Not very silica efficient!

I use 500 grams of silica in my chamber each time, 5g dry mushrooms from my jar really gave my silica a beating and it came out quite dark (it is light orange when it is new and fresh, then changes to a neutral and then dark green colour when saturated).

So yeah, put them infront of a fan for quite a while and they will end up pretty dry, very dry, depending on how long you leave them infront of the fan for.
Then just place them in the silica chamber for a day or two and they should come out cracker dry, literally cracker dry. Snap and no bending whatsoever.
I thought I knew what cracker dry was until I really found out what cracker dry was after leaving some mushrooms in the silica chamber for around a week.

Use your oven...

Also how much can a shroom be bruised but yet still potent. I have a single one that is bruised to hell

I don't know I never used an oven for drying but have heard of many people doing it

I think you jus put it the lowest setting and leave the oven door open

I don't think it would stink up your house
