any sailors or navigators out there???
    #21254921 - 02/10/15 06:54 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

I was wondering why it was so difficult for people way, way back to sail across the ocean? What scientific knowhow did the first people need to do it?

And a side question: would it be possible to navigate across the ocean if you had a perfect and accurate measurement of the earths dimensions and its place in the solar system at any given time?

Any Input/ideas are welcome:themoreyouknow:

Some of it has to do with knowledge of the sea.  For example, some portugise explorers would go down the coast of africa.  But the winds would blow them away from home, so they had to tack against the wind to get back.  The further down africa they would go the harder they would have to tack and they were afraid they would get to a point where they could never get back.  Only after the greater atlantic was explored was it found that winds and currents are favorable for going back north if you go out to sea.  Then the explorers would feel safe knowing they could go out into the atlantic and get north easily.

Yes.  That is effectively the same as finding longitude with a calibrated clock.  By noting the position of the sun above you, having a compass and noting the position of the earth realitve to the sun in the solar system you can use geometry and angles to find your position on the globe.

Could you do it without a clock?

Sure, using the solar system's current state as you suggested.  But then, looking at the sun is rudimentary clock...  You arn't going to do any navigation without considering time in some sense.

Using your idea...  Take the angle between the sun and straight up.  On your real-time model of the solar system, take a line from the center of the earth to the sun and move it by that angle away from the sun.  That location on the earth is a possible location for you.  Swipe out a whole circle around the line from the earth's center to the sun.  That circle is all your possible locations.  If you know which way north and south is you can use the ships orientation to find where one that circle you lie.

Awesome thank you:highfive:

I was thinking that if it is true that the great pyramids were in fact a stone book holding the measurements of the earth and solar system that would mean the Egyptians 4000 years ago could in theory sail around the world.

Does that seem right if this is true?

Absolutely not.  How could a stone book give you the accurate measurement of the earths dimensions and its place in the solar system at any given time?  That information is constantly changing.  You need satellites and computers to create such a real time model.

This is the science forum.  Try the conspiracy forum, they will support your idea.
