Lowering PH in Casing???
    #2126636 - 11/21/03 01:12 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

My friend is casing for the first time and is not able to get the little buggers to pin still after 6+ weeks. his RH is 75%, cold shocked 1st time in the fridge, 2nd time 10 deg lower, and is using a mod of the "sea of shrooms tec http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7976
By using Jiffy mix and 4x4 corningware. He finaly got some PH strips to test the casing layer and it's looking in the 10 range. The same soil out of the bag is showing about a 6. Micelium growth is strong and we can't seem to find in any of the tecs about the ph of lime. We know brands can very, wich would also be nice to find a brand in the midwest that people have had success with since neither of us can find "hi-yield". Any help would be great! We have thought about adding some peat moss to the existing casing layer, or should he just scrape off the existing and start over???
Thanks!!!

Is the "jiffy mix PLUS" being used?

IMO, I would:

1) Scrape off the casing layer and apply a well PH balanced one (contam risk)
OR
2) Mist the casing with a solution of water/alka setzer or magnesium or calcium or whatever basic substance.
OR
3) Start over.

I?m sorry, # 2 replace the alka setzer or whatever for an acidic substance cause your problem is it?s too basic.

Actually the soil used was Schultz natural organic potting mix.

I would use vinegar very very diluted in water. Measure the PH of the mix with a strip before you mist cause you don?t want to burn the casing layer. Then mist as normally a few days and test it again. That?s what I would do.

how much does ph really affect mushroom growth? if I'm getting mushrooms, but not as many as I think I should be getting, could PH be a problem (not the only problem but one of them?) i cased 5 brf cakes with coir/verm.

If it is at the 10 range, it sure will affect. I always check the ph of my casing material cause I don?t trust no one but me.
Your problem with not getting the expected shrooms could be many different factors such as air exchange, humidity in the chamber, water content of the casing material (brf or grain casings need lots of water not just light mistings; read the NanNook Archives; water delivery to casings), no light, ph, temperature.

Agreed. Each successive number on the pH meter is 10 times more acidic if going down in number or more basic if going up.

For example, if the ideal is to have a pH of 7.5 to 8, and your pH is at 10, that means it's two whole number integers away, or 100 times more basic than what it should be(10 X 10 = 100). At pH 9 it would be 10 times greater, at pH 10 it would be 10 times 10 or 100 times more basic than the ideal. I'm sure this would affect your casings negatively.

Like Semilanceata said, use a dilute soln of acetic acid (vinegar) and water. You can test the solute/solvent ration with your litmus strips before misting. Good luck
