Cake to grain

Sorry if this has been answered before but could you cut from a cake to inoculate a popcorn grain?

You probably could, but it isn't the best way to do things.

You think spores would be better?

well it really depends on what you have available but as a personal choice i'd innoc with the cake if you have a SAB and are confident in your methods

Why would you choose the cake?

well i for one hate having to sit through the germination period that comes with spores but thats just my opinion and in my opinion quicker to colonization= less contam worry

I see where you're going there, but I'd point out that you can transfer many minor bacterial contams from a cake sample, too.

Check out this thread. Slurry type 1

I've done 10 jars and half of them are fully colonized in 3 days. The other half are 50% or more. I haven't fruited them yet, so take that with a grain of salt.

Have you done grains before, though?

I would be very careful about recommending teks you haven't seen through in their entirety.

That being true, I'm very confident in my sterile technique and I've followed the results of this method seeing nothing but great things, under sterile procedures.

Again, it's not a beginner technique whatsoever. If you haven't done grains before, I highly suggest another form of inoculation.

And why do you say be very careful? I'm pointing him to a thread, not writing a tek with untested methods.

Just an FYI: common consensus these days is that it doesn't need to be dark.

I'm very careful not to recommend teks I haven't tried my self. Not only would I not be able to help that person if they run in to problems, but I would also get a black mark on my reputation with that person if they can't get it to work.

Again, I referenced a tek that has lots of success in it. It's the same as a new member pointing another new member to Frank's list of teks. I'm sure he hasn't tried them all, and if he did he would probably run into a problem along the way.

To reiterate, making a PF slurry and this method of inoculation are NOT for beginners or people NOT confident in their sterile technique. I would highly suggest other methods in that case. I asked specifically if he had worked with grains prior.

As a personal choice, because I am confident in my sterile procedures and inoculation methods, I also prefer being able to colonize 20 quarts off 1 PF cake in 3 days.

I agree that it's exactly like a new member pointing another new member to Frank's teks.
