Never heard of anyone accomplishing it, but definitely worth the try.

My A. caput-medusae produced 20 seeds last autumn. Now it either hybridised with another Astrophytum, or the species is self fertile. I will find out this coming season.

My caput-medusae has yet to do anything but I did save some pollen and got it stored in the freezer. You never know about cross pollination.

Picked up a decent superkabuto, got sick of trying to grow these bastards from seed and not getting the right genetics.

Lovely man. And i know what you mean. I got some you dont know whether they are asterias or myriostygmas. Good score man.

Generally asterias has eight ribs, myriostigma five.
Here is a rather mis-shapen A. asterias - not sure why it has gone that way, started off perfectly normal. It is quite firm and hard.
And some more A. asterias - a grower traded seeds a few years back - these were described as ´superkabuto´ - and they all came up differently. One I grafted just for fun, but those on their own roots have outgrown that one.

Yeah those are beauties. The problem I've had and which I think Ferrel was alluding to is that a lot of seeds sold as "superkabuto" end up having mixed attributes indicating some kind of hybridization between A. myriostgima or A. capricorne and A. asteries. For some reason, the ones that have turned out to be pure A asterias for me all have the kikko (chinned) rib formation and little to no flocking or tufts on the areoles. Finding good snow-quality supar or ooibo seed domestically is near impossible. There's a pimp ass Czech site that has amazing astrophytums but their minimum order is 100 euro and I'm not ready to drop that kind of coin on seeds with the low survival rate I have with astros. A group buy might be an option if anyone is interested though.

Of the 4 in the pics I believe only one is superkabuto. We got a nuda, a regular one. One Tha I think is myriostygma strongylogunum.
What do you think?

Those will be interesting to see grow out. The two of them with sharper ribs look more like hybrids to me.

I ordered seeds years ago and all those astros were as queer as a 3 dollar bill. Only the strong survive. So I got good ones and odd ones. I want some of the snow variety.

Here's what PZap is talking about:
These are all "Superkabuto", and I doubt that any one will be worth breeding on. The "Superkabuto" trait is very elusive.
(and yes, I know I should repot these. Maybe this weekend)

Some of those are alright, I'd be happy with that sowing. My problem is that I get seeds that are very obviously not even pure superkabuto genetics. Like these obvious hybrids:
Or these that are obviously nudum/kikko but not superkabuto, maybe that one that looks like a standard asteries will get better with time, I doubt it.
Only this one looks like it will do anything interesting.
These are all clones from the same mother:
They're my favorite asteries that I have in my collection, at least they have some nice variegation and some interesting kikko formation in their ribs. I know these plants don't come true to seed, but I do expect them to at least look like they came from the plant I was expecting and not a cross or entirely different variety. Next time I'll shell out a little more and try the pricier vendor. You go with a "good deal" on flea bay and you get an inferior product I suppose.

This was also of the myriostygma line. Looks capricorne.
And here is my caput-medusae graft showing growth.

Another flower for my myriostygma on the way up.
Anyone care to take a gander at how long these usually take for the flower to open. It seems stalled out.
