Kind of you to say so, ferrel. It is just the Mediterranean climate I guess, combined with a gritty soil mix.

ferrel_human said: Tell me this Zed, that ornatum is in need of a transplant bad. It has never flowered in my,possesion and im growing antsy. I would like to see it flower eventually and its been almost a decade of nothing even in a rock mix. Do you think there is a problem?
The plant looks to be as good as any flowerwise. If it doesn't, it means it needs something other than sun and time. I'm a bit concerned about the loss of spines, was it natural or were they bumped or pulled off? That and the lack of flower may mean the roots are not taking up what the plant needs, either for lack of roots themselves or lack of anything to take up. Try first some good feeding and if that doesn't work, take it off the pot, inspect the roots for nasties and repot it.
The fertilizer you can start right now. If it's that, it should bloom in the spring. If it does not do it by April or May, repot.

Hey Ferrel.
I thought I'd pop in and say (feed them). Give them a lil extra food love. I did that for my Astros this year and they bloomed all summer.
The advice that Zed Gave you, is the same I would. Feed them, and or maybe repot and inspect the roots.
I know that with my Hoya plants, they do not like being repotted and may not bloom for a few years after being in a new pot. They like to be root-bound in order to bloom. I can't say the same for cacti, but it might be something to consider.
Hope they bloom for you this next season.

Im gonna repot it for sure but feeding them goes against total rock growing. Im at a loss. Repot first and wait and next spring i will feed them some dilute organic ferts(water soluble)
Edit. The spines was my of my doing.,they came off so easy and i didnt stop. Its so friendly now.

Looks good, there are several fine roots growing over the fabric at the bottom. No mealies on sight? I understand your rock growing philosophy, but vigorous growers (like your Astro) will starve if not fed (duh!) regularly and sulk forever. A pot is not equivalent to open soil, where there is lateral movement and upwelling of the solubles in the soil, nutes being carried by water running on the surface, etc., as well as a healthy and varied microfauna and flora to turn organic matter into usable nutrients. In fact, you'r treating your plants harder than in nature. Come on, concede and give them something to eat.

Im gonna get some rock beds going. See if that helps. All my others are, doing, quite, well. I dont want my,rock, endevours to fail. But it seems that may be the case.

It's not failing, it's just dragging its ass for (apparently) lack of feeding.
Or it could be something different altogether, what do I know?

My mix is 65% rock - coarse grit and crushed limestone. But there is some topsoil and organic material - including Kelp as recommended by your good self, ferrel. Costs a fortune here but they do seem to like it.

Its the pride of my collection. Every year it starts with the flower buds. They fall off. And then the incoming buds puts out some beautiful flowers.

Same would happen to my one when it was alive. Yours has grown into a great plant. I'd be proud as well.

That is an awesome A. caput-medusae, Ferrel. Do you keep yours outdoors, in the rain, year round? And what about that Aztekium valdezianum on the back of the first picture?

Yup. Out year round. It has been a fairly good year and the rrock helps with not retaining too much water.
