shiitake spores and tricoderma
    #21260663 - 02/11/15 08:08 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

RR, who I am really starting to miss on this site, was talking about trichoderma and shiitake being related in some way. I think he went as far to suggest the mold may be and anamorph of shiitake. I can see why.

I find this very interesting due to the following observations:

If shiitake are allowed to drop spores in mass on the blocks, Trichoderma colonizes the white spore deposit area first which later turns green.

The mold seem then to go to the gills and fruit-body.
Can anyone else collaborate with this observation, or suggest why this may be occurring.
Do spores taste better than the flesh or the substrate?

Do you have a link to his post on this?  I'd be interested to read it!

I've never personally observed trich growing on the spore deposits first, but I haven't grown anywhere near as much shiitake as RR.  I have had them drop a lot of spores on the block before and it didn't seem to make them any more prone to trich contamination, but idk   Also I've never seen trich grow on the fruit bodies themselves, but I always harvest as soon as they mature.

As far as spore taste, I've never heard of it being actually desired or tasting better than the mushroom (and why would you be eating the substrate?).  If you're letting them drop that many spores, I think you may be harvesting too late.  I would harvest right before the margin "uncurls", and you'll get longer shelf-life and better taste.

I was referring to the "taste buds" of fungi not people.

I agree it is not desirable for shiitake  caps to expand and release spores. But when it happens sometimes, for example, after the first flush where small mushrooms are not harvested timely or of low quality and completely expand, or on spent blocks in which the mushroom are completely left to natures demise. I notice the phenomena.

Ill see if I can find rr comment on the subject.

Ah, gotcha on the "taste" thing.  Sorry I don't have any info to provide there, but it's an interesting idea!

Hopefully you find out more, I am interested to learn as well.
