Why does my BRF cake look like this? (pics)

Hey everyone! So this is my second attempt on brf jars and the first ones came out looking like normal brf jars, but my second batch looks like it has too much brf. I used a 1 cup measuring scoop for 2:1:1(v/brf/w) ratio both times. The only thing I did differently was instead of just mixing all of together at once, I mixed the water and verm first then slowly mixed in the flour. I also steamed sterilized it for about 20 minutes longer. Also if someone could fill me in on what a cake like this means for the mycelium, since I can already see small spots growing, that'd be awesome. Oh and I did look through older threads, but I couldn't find any pics that looked like this. Thank you.

I dunno man. Your 2nd batch looks off, but based on your details I'm not sure why. Looks to me like you flipped your flour and verm ratios, but
I guess as long as it continues to colonize I'd just let it ride. Try not to mess with the jars and just keep an eye on them.

You did it right the second time. The difference in the texture of your sub has to do with you mixing brf with dry verm the first go-round. You will probably see much better results this go. The whole idea of mixing the PF substrate is to get your verm up to field capacity first, then after mixing in you flour to coat the verm crystals.
Just be careful not to over or under pack your jars. I see a lot of your top verm layer is falling down the sides of your jars already. That has the potential to throw off the moisture content of your sub.

I didn't pack it at actually, just loosely scooped it in. It just threw my off because all the other pics of brf jars look like the first one, and nothing like the second. Thank you for the replies.

It's a tricky balance on how to pack jars. Too much either way can be disastrous. If you go to RR's PF vids, you'll see he takes careful care in finishing the top and the lip of the jars. Pay attention to what he does there. It's tight enough to keep the top verm layer in place throughout colonization, but not so tight as to have it stall-out down the road.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out, I'm going to be making some fresh jars anyway since I'll have access to my buddy's PC.
