Mold? Bruising? Nothing to worry about?
    #21248841 - 02/09/15 02:42 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Hello gentlemen,

I want to start my first post with a huge "Thanks" to all of you guys at shroomery for the incredible time and effort you put in to helping each other out with various projects. I've rarely seen such a cool, non-judgmental community.

Now, on to business. I've been a long-time lurker and finally decided to start my first grow using the BRF Tek described in RR's Let's Grow Mushrooms videos. Obviously, even though I watched the videos 10-15 times and spent countless late nights reading 50+ page threads (Hi taGyo and your awesome grow log), I've made some mistakes...

One of my first mistakes was not getting the right jars (I have the right ones for my second go around). My second is probably (read: positively) less than sterile conditions during inoculation. Which brings me to the question at hand: is this mold, bruising or nothing to worry about?

This is one of the 4 jars I inoculated with a syringe from a sponsor. This one is the slowest of the 4, the others have just reached 100% and are now consolidating and this one is at about 95%. The discoloration came about at 85-90%. I tried to take pictures from different angles to give you guys a good idea about color/size. It's not black or green as I've seen in a lot of the contam threads...it's more of a light gray, almost like it could be an effect of the glass and lighting creating a shadow (I know it's not).

If it is something bad, should I throw out the jar? Or should I birth it and remove that section (or leave it intact)? The rest of the mycelium seems to be doing great, it's pure white.

Thanks again, I appreciate all the knowledge on this website! :mushroom2:

That doesn't look good, but I can't really tell because the pic is kind of blurry.  If you put the jar down and then rest your forearms on something while you take a picture it'll turn out much better.

Definitely looks like mold to me.

Isolate that jar from the others and let it grow just in case.

Haha, I'll take that into account for future pictures

I guess I'll just toss it. I only have one SGFC for the moment and don't have room to build a second one to isolate this one and see what happens.

Thank you gentlemen!

Just to be safe. You do mean isolate it once in the fruiting chamber, correct? If so, I'll just toss it, as I said in my previous post. If not, is it safe to throw it in the SGFC with the rest and keep a close eye on it or is it too risky?

IMO, if that's mold, it'll make itself known shortly.  Certainly before you put it into the fruiting chamber.

This.. I meant, put the jar somewhere other then the other jars.. And see what happens.

I've seen mold and mycelium co exists, just not very often.. Not in my jars anyway.

Duly noted. I'll put it in another room to finish colonizing. Assuming the mold doesn't take over the jar during the final days of colonization (should be another 2-3 days at this rate), should I let it consolidate?

If it's going to be a risk no matter what, I'd rather just toss it. I know you guys always say "When in doubt throw it out"...

  Yeah, we do say that pretty often.  But we've all had false positives.  I had one two days ago, and I'm really glad I didn't tell the guy to pitch his grow.

Yeah this..

Definitely don't throw it out yet.. "Just let it grow bro"

That should be the new slogan. Lol.

Let it consolidate, smell it.. Does it smell like dirty gym socks? Or earthy?

It smells just like my other inoculated jars to be honest. Earthy, fresh.. I've set it aside in another room and I'll wait until it gets 100% colonized and go from there.

Assuming I can get it to full colonization and then through a week of consolidation, what would the risks be in opening it up for the dunk and roll?

If it's full colonized and it doesn't smell, fuck try birthing, dunking, and rolling that..

If there's no obvious sign of mold, then try it lol..

But make sure you throw it if it starts getting moldy, you don't want to be growing some dangerous fungus :sun:

molded cakes usually just crumble during the rinse IME, those look more bacterial to me
but there might be some mold on the upper parts of the cake. hard to tell when the growth is so thick...

it wasnt meant as a reply to you, more to the OP.
but I hear where you're coming from and I agree to some point.
minor mold in grain jar = trash, minor bacteria in grain jar = single jar into small bucket grow in my world

Cool, thanks for the input guys. I'll keep an eye on it and reevaluate if it makes it through the consolidation period! Fingers crossed!
