Central CA, ID assistance
    #21254843 - 02/10/15 06:42 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Hello All,

I have been watching these guys the past few days, and would appreciate any and all insight. These specimens are growing out of multiple pots on my porch. The pots have palm trees, but i have just added fresh compost recently. Patio is covered by a 40 foot tall oak tree, stays cool yet while getting sunlight. I have undergone the process to make a spore print, and will update tomorrow with color. Here is what i have so far.....

Habitat:
Central Coast CA. Growing in pots with new soil/ fertilizer combo after fresh rain. (Palm Trees in Pots). Elevation near 750ft. Climate between 60-75f daytime, with 45-55f nights

Gills:
dark brown/ black

Stem:
6-8cm in length, .5cm in diameter, white, hollow thin and fragile stem when fresh.

Cap:
3.5cm - 5cm in width, slimy texture. Conical, Convex shape when fresh, when matured (24-48hrs) the tips of the cap start to flare up. Light brown caps when young, mature into darker olive/ brown color. White residue seems to be coming off the cap, like a skin.

Spore print color:
I have taken my first spore print, and will update tomorrow with color

Bruising:
none at this time

Dumping black liquid, i assume these are spores? Thank you in advance for all of the insight!

Cheers

I doubt it's actually poisonous. I can't find any reference to any toxins produced by the mushroom or accounts of poisonings. Inky caps like yours are generally edible, although Coprinopsis atramentaria contains a compound called coprine which will make you very sick if you drink alcohol after eating them.
