fire fang is easy to find on almost all aged cow poo.
i think all it is good for is pre-digesting/composting manure.

about 10 years ago i remember reading about thoughts on liberty caps having a semi-symbiotic relationship with fire fang.
also experiments was concidered of supplementing fire fang for fruiting libs indoors.
what came of this who knows?

i dont think it will help other than to make the substrate more readily available for the mycelium to digest and as we mainly grow cubes and they digest manure or coir based subs with relative ease the resulting benefits would probably be negligable and un-measurable.

So I just finished casing a coir tub and made a discovery that seems to confirm my suspicions about coir, and contams. As I was smoothing the casing I discovered a round brownish object. Curious I picked it out and found a plump grain. Not sure what kind of grain but a grain of some kind nonetheless. Fuck!

So this has got me thinking about coir, the possibility of poor quality control and what factors might be involved. So I usually use pet store bricks for casing with, as I like the texture better. But the last couple of months I was unable to get the Exo Terra that I prefer, and was stuck getting eco earth which I find has a greater chance of finding rocks, sticks and straw. Well now I found a grain in it too. Coincidentally (or maybe not) I had recently had two tubs contam during pinning that I had no reason to suspect were off. The contam was also localized and not spread throughout, which leads me to think that it was not the spawn persay.

So I am now quite certain that it is the crappy eco earth product. I will no longer be using it for anything but bottle subs from now on. I certainly have not had the same issue with the coir from the hydro shops or the Exoterra. Anyone got any thoughts on my discovery?

I am also extra pissed as that tub was for a grow log I was doing, hopefully there are no other random bits of detritus that will cause it to contam.

EcoEarth :doublefu:

from time to time i find contaminants such as rocks ect in coir. regardless of brand. it happens. but ive not lost too many tubs from this issue. ill still use eco earth as its the easiest to get a hold of. its unfortunate that this happened. live and learn. any mass manufacturer is not 100% perfect. it happens.

ive been using eco earth for over 10 years. haven't seen any sprouts or grain over the years. not to say it doesn't happen. but its far and few between. anything mass produced has a small percentage of loss.

Point is freshly spawned substrates are always somewhat vulnerable. Cleanliness in spawning is of the utmost importance. Commercial mushroom farms have procedures to prevent pasteurized substrate from being exposed to dust or soil, something that gets overlooked a lot here.

But some are better than others. I really don't care about the rocks screws etc. I do worry about grains and straw. As I said before I don't have an expectation that it will be product with high quality control.  That doesn't mean I should be willing to accept a pile of crap in each brick. Straw and grains will readily contaminate and given that the purpose of the pet grade coir is meant to be uncolonized and sit hydrated in a heated enclosure without molding, the level of junk in the eco earth is unacceptible.

If people are sticking to the eco earth for cost reasons then I must ask why are they not buying their coir from hydro shops. I can buy a 5 kilogram brick for the same price as a three pack of eco earth. That's more than double the product which has a better quality.

I've used eco earth for about 2 years now. I don't have a problem with it, no complaints. I do find rocks and shit in it sometimes, but not enough to make me stop buying it. When I'm mixing I just
Pick out the obnoxiously big shit and fuck the rest. I've only gotten trich twice and once was from un sterilized coir and the other Idk what happened.
I find big chucks of coconut husk more than rocks though, maybe that's what you are seeing.

I have seen lots of husk. Pretty sure I can tell the difference between that and a rock or grain or pieces of straw.

I guess if its working for you stick with the earth. But given that I have been using mostly hydro coir for myco stuff and exo terra for my pets, I can't see how eco earth is preferable given the cheaper and higher quality options available.

Anyway my intention for this thread was not to bash anything. Rather it was to make people aware of higher quality alternate products that neither cost more or are more difficult to source.

All I was saying is that of you go over the point to where your beneficial microbes are eliminated and can not fight for you ,you will be left with bacterial endospores, no matter what.

Coir is dehydrated and stored like that for a relatively long time. I doubt you'll find much bacteria on it other than endospore forming bacteria to begin with as most other bacteria wouldn't survive that long in those conditions. Not to mention few bacteria are capable of obtaining nutrients from the coir itself.

Ummm wow, Eco Earth?!

My bricks have been large particle free lately, but I did buy a pack of 3 x 650g bricks and get the equivalent of 4.5 bricks. I'm not complaining...yet.

On another note, I switched from store brand to Pennington WBS and that shit is FILTHY. Found hornets nests, entire peanuts, and more cracked corn than for my liking.

Usually i just dump the boiling water on the brick.. this time i ripped it open with a fork then broke it into small chunks and then rubbed the chunks together in my hand to break it down as much as possible. After reading this thread and finding pieces of plastic trash bags in the last one i figured i'd get a better look.

Since it's for a plant i really don't care lol. I rinsed the shit out of though because plants don't like salt... except for esparagus. Hydro grade is generally pre-washed. This shit definitely isn't. Seems like its just scooped up and packaged.

You would think "animal grade" coir would be cleaner.

It was eco earth. Really the first set of bricks I've seen like this though. I bought them in November. They probably have multiple sources for their coir.

Reminds me of mexican brick weed lol. rocks, sticks and tree bark.

This is all i could pick out of my garbage without getting messy.
