Straight peat as casing ?

Im out of coir, out of verm, out of money.
But I was digging around the garage for something to case with and I have peat, and I do have lime.
Does peat hit with a little lime make suitable casing without any vermiculite added?
Dont think I've used peat by itself before.
Thsnks! -mush

Should be fine just pasteurize it with some lime added. Peat is acidic but adding some lime will Mellow it out some. I'm sure someone will chime in but I did all my early grows with straight peat as a substrate and it still worked out. I still have an open bale of peat sitting on the side of my house from like 8/9 years ago. That's some hardcore field aging.

Thanks man! Shit I dug out the lime I found and its gardening lime, not hydrated lime. I dont think it will raise the PH in the short term.
I have gypsum, but no lime... guess ill have to go buy a coir brick do a straight coir casing.
Vermiculite is out of stock for another week or so in my area I have to order it.

peat drys out a bit quicker by its self also it has a smaller particle size so it sits tighter to the sub. with that said, you should be fine anyway, also you don't need a casing layer for cubes.

I only use a casing sometimes but this is for casing penis envy. It prefers a casing.
Yea turns out the lime in my garage wont raise the PH. Wonder should I chance it without lime and just gypsum or is that a bad idea

Gypsum does not alter the PH it just makes it stay the same. As far as the lime it should raise the ph remember 7 is neutural and bellow is acidic and above 7 is alkaline but if you are in the 5.5 to 8.5 range you should be fine. Plus misting with tap water the water picks up calcium from running through miles of pipe.
