Opening the Mod Forums

I think it ridiculous that all decision making is discussed behind closed doors. We get the gist here and there, but it's mostly the end product of what would seem to be endless deliberation. If you opened the Mod Forums: Shroomerites would have more information to base our opinions from; Mods would have the benefit of more informed individuals with more precisely formulated opinions; and the Shroomery wouldn't be viewed by it's members as run by the Gestapo. The Mod Forums wouldn't have to be open for replying and posting, but rather for viewing. This place would feel a lot more welcome if we could see what you folks have to say.

What about when mods/admins are dicussing things that don't need to be public? For example if someone was running scams in the marketplace and they were deciding to monotor the person and take action, then the person would know what's going on. That's just one example, there are many more... Then what make a public mod forum and a hidden one for that kind of stuff? People would still complain because there was a hidden one, that wouldn't work.

That's why it wouldn't be open to discussion. Just viewing.

I didn't know the mod forum was such a place. Thank you for listening MM. Could there ever be a split in the two? Is there more than one Mod Forum? I think a lot of people feel alienated, I'm just trying to feel out how people could feel more a part of the community.

____________________________________________ when I was mod I rarely posted here because I was so busy moderating and posting in there. ____________________________________________
Well I thank you for being upfront. I know you used to be a Mod, correct? It seems like you've always been honest with your opinion and the such. Are you saying that Mods posting in the Feedback forum could be the alternative?

No, the thursday night pizza partys...... I think its pretty important to have a seperate forum for staff to discus issues, and just generaly interact with each other. This, like the dump should not be open to those that arent on the staff, so to speak. as we need a place to unwind, and eat pizza..... Why do you think people view the staff as the gestapo? Or are you just clouded by the otd issue? An speaking from and otd stand point?

As stated in my PM to you on this matter:

Re: Wondering ... Sent to: Prodijal_Son
We simply cannot open up the Mod Forum. Personal contact information for some mods & admins is available in the forum, not to mention we discuss matters and potential problems with members. We do not want the public jumping to conclusions because of something that was thrown up for debate in the mod forum - and if we opened it for read-only access, we would be bombarded with communication from members who want to be a part of how the site runs. It just isn't feasible.
As far as an update to OTD - I specifically stated no less than 10 days until we came to a final conclusion. We are still brainstorming ideas and as of yet, none have been decided upon. Thanks for your interest though.
Take it easy, ~mike

Not to mention people would start threads in the open forums to discuss things going on in the mod forum.
Outside of the posts about scammers, people's personal info, etc.. There is the simple fact that because it is hidden it allows for open discussion amongst mods to bring up whatever they want.
Every website with a message board has a hidden forum for mods/admins, this is the same logic people having meetings behind closed doors in business etc..
There are over 40 mods on the website, so we have a wide range of people's opinions there and most debate is typical of what the community would see in an open debate. Most of the time decisions are based on what the community wants, some times you do see decisions made that are felt to be the best for the community even when most people don't see it that way.

Evildoer! Edit: It's not only the talking shit though, but sometimes users post other user's personal information - and we keep it on record in the forum because they might be a supposed scammer, etc. There is a lot of sensitive information in the forum that simply should not be public knowledge.

I was once a mod, and I certainly agree that there are some things that get posted in the mod forum that shouldn't be made public for good reason.
However, I think there are certain discussions, such as the on concerning the current OTD debacle, that should be made public somehow.
Perhaps a Shroomery C-SPAN forum, where selected threads can be mirrored in a read only format... if that's possible. Just a thought.

After reading Geokills PM, that's exactly what I had in mind. The whole C-SPAN Forum that is. Some kind of half way point. I'm new to the whole Feedback Forum, so I can't really say that the Mods don't participate enough. It seems like public sensitive issues could be kept in the Mod Forum, and the other issues discussed openly in the Feedback Forum. Mod Gestapo ... I don't see the Mods as Gestapo. I've just heard that a lot from people. I'm just thinking of how we could bring the folks who come here closer to those that make things happen. I'm trying to understand why people have such a distaste for the Mods besides the natural distrust of power structure.
