Moe's outdoor tek got me thinking..
If one had 100 cakes ready.
dug a 3 foot deep hole with a 8 foot radius.
loaded the bottom 3 inches of horse shit.
put 25 cakes crushed on the bottom. then straw.
put 60 cakes touching on top of the straw.
and then filled the rest with horse shit.
with the remainder 15 cakes on the surface with a little horse shit coco coir mix.
you wouldn't have to worry about growing anymore would you? that shit would last forever

yes assuming that the temps are right in your area and the air is humid enough.

You wouldn't want to go that deep. Six to Eight inches is as far down as you would want to go. If you live in the south(like me), then you can most definately do this. Just keep adding nutrients to your patch every year, water when neccessary, and reap the rewards of your hard work.

If there is a chance that cold weather might last for a long period of time you might want to look into some way to keep the bed warm in order to stave off frost. I have a mini greenhouse setup that I'm planning on implementing soon. I just haven't figured out just how I want to do it just yet.

Theres no need for that many cakes! Just use a cake or two per patch, and do multiple patches ...
