Why do you hunt
    #21246382 - 02/09/15 01:31 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

I'm in a great mood, which is unusual, and it got me thinking about what makes me keep hunting and cultivating fungi. Thinking on it for a bit, I think it's a conglomerate of ideas, memories and that feeling of your senses all coming together to create and conquer the most extravagant finds. That feeling, for me, when you see that carpet of P.cyanescens, Smoking a bowl in the middle of the fairy ring of white Chantrelles I stumble upon, Morel hunting with my 59 year old mom. It's everything combined. From my first active find, to the first memory I have of a polypore out the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River when I was 3-4 years old. Friends, Family, Nature, and people such as myself from all over this world connected on this site.

You, Me, that sweet earth smell, wet jackets and cold feet. Counter tops making way for newspaper, dehydrators and fans to dry our finds while our dreams yearn for the next glimpse. Nothing can replace it. It is hard to share, but easy to experience. That smell when the night turns day:bliss:

So what's YOUR reason for hunting? Tell a Story or simply a why... We are all addicted to it, that's why we are here.  :youthemandawg:

Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

My reason for starting to hunt was to try to find actives. I had already tripped a couple times and my trips had really helped pull me out of a bout of depression. Found nothing the first year, but the second year I found a mighty patch for my first patch. Split it with some friends, and I had a couple really important life changing trips on the mushrooms from that specific patch.

My reason for hunting now? I love the outdoors more now. I can appreciate the little things. I'll never forget the trips from that patch, and I am always ready to get out there and make new ones. Although I have only found cyanescens so far, I know one day I will find other actives and hunt for edibles as well. Mushrooms are a very interesting life form and they are a big part of my life, there is no way I could stop hunting!

I just started hunting this year looking for actives because I no longer have a connect for shrooms. Also I find it very enjoyable because I love nature, and the act of trying to find something like you're on a treasure hunt is very fun to me!

I love the thrill of the hunt. It started when my friend introduced me to liberty caps in high school. At first I was only interested in actives but over the years my interest has switched more towards edibles, cultivation, photography, and identification. I used to think this mycology stuff was just a hobby but it has turned into a full blown addiction.

I find myself thinking about mushrooms all the time, I used to get so excited with the first cool fall rains knowing that the season was close. Then I discovered that the season doesn't end until I stop looking so now I just look all year. I can't seem to stop myself, everywhere I go everything I do I'm looking.

I'm mushme and I'm an addict

Mostly for exercise/fun and to find stuff to clone. Occasionally for food/medicinals. I always have fun hunting because fungi are often so elusive and also often beautiful.

Hopefully this coming season I will collect more for microscopy and to sharpen my ID skills a bit too.

You said it perfectly.

It is more than a fascination definitely an addiction for me.  I've tried cutting back but I tend to come back like a crack head to the pipe.

Everything about mushrooms and hunting seems to tie all of life's loose ends together into a beautiful thread that connects all into one.  Every trip is the same yet different in a most profound and beautiful experience.  I've seen the sun and moon exist in the same realm as half of the sky is night and slowly transition into day.  I've watched the morning dew illuminated by the rising sun glissen and freeze into a crystal palace full of wonder.

Maybe those are the reasons I still do not know.  I've thought of your question myself for a few years now.  Feels like we all have the same addiction why I do not know.

On a side note curious if anybody else has noticed or experienced the same luck as I have.  The more I study and learn about mycology or experience the rewards of the fruit.  The less money I make!!  Wtf. Maybe it's just me.

:feelsshroomyman:
I dont really hunt for mushrooms, i kinda just live my life and find mushrooms every once in a while
i love the idea of hunting for actives but LI doesn't have much. There is some wood lovers and some gyms but im so afraid of collecting the wrong thing and getting myself or someone i care about sick.
I collect chicken of the woods and reishi because a 3 year old can ID them.
If I knew more about ID i would hunt for free food.
maybe leschampignons can teach me a thing or two we seem to be close-ish.

I hunt because I love magic mushrooms.. and I would have to say it can be very useful knowledge, especially if you ended up lost. When I tell my friends that I hunt for them, they all think I am stupid and don't know what I am doing or looking for. I just laugh..

I also search for edibles, too. Lots of Auricularia Auricula in my area

I hunt because I have since a long as I could remember.  I was always interested, made my first print on my dolly's blanket in kindergarten and I just love being in tune with nature...I feel they speak to me.
I also love taking children and friends hunting...there is nothing like spreading my excitement onto them-it's contagious!  Then, letting them make prints and putting them under a scope-Oh the excitement and how proud that we are part of the cycle of learning and teaching!  It's just wonderful and along the way, one learns more about themselves and one another!

Being out in nature is very therapeutic IMO.
Nothing like sampling some delicacies straight from mother nature's teat.
Good exercise.
Fun.
I often pick more chanterelles than I can handle and have an opportunity to give some away or sell.
Used to pick pines near home (pre clearcut) for sale only, not a fan.
I indulge in actives about once a year for the last ten anyways and choose to only do so with ones I pick.
