Juggling/Contact Juggling/Hand Balancing
    #21247410 - 02/09/15 09:58 AM (8 years, 11 months ago)

So I am actually a professional street performer, and I would love to share what I do with other shroomery members. There are enormous psychological as well as physical benefits from juggling.

I don't do poi or any of the other "low level" skill toys. I do tricks with 3-5 balls currently, and short bursts with 6-7. I also contact juggle, but I don't do the fushigi style "isolations", I stick more to "body rolling" as it's termed in the community, it is higher in difficulty. I can also give people the hierarchy of exercises I've followed to learn hand balancing.

Fellow shroomerite and juggler.

I also juggle at what appears to be a similar level to you.  I can run 6 balls and do a few of the easier siteswaps, I consistently qualify 7 but never get more than about 30 catches, and my 3 to 5 ball is super solid with a fair number of tricks in my repertoire.  I really like passing balls.  I can do a fair bit with clubs as well, although, I am struggling to get more than 100 catches with 5 and certainly can't do tricks out of 5.  I don't even mess with rings - I love my hands too much for that.

I do not perform however; it is strictly a hobby.  I also dabble in poi and kendama although I suck at them because they are certainly not low level skills.  I consider myself an object manipulator and enjoy playing with many props even though I am really only good at toss-up juggling (and moderate at bounce).  Contact juggling is fun, but I only know a few super basic things.

In any case, what were you thinking of teaching in this thread?

Well I pretty well listed my skill set. I have qualified 7 once, nowhere near getting 30 catches. I'm glad to share contact juggling and hand balancing stuff though.

Everything will basically be taught via skill progressions, only way to learn this stuff.

What is your street show like?  Are you a solo artist or part of a group?  Where do you perform (is it Europe/US/etc)?  Do you go to any juggling conventions?

Just curious.

I decided to dig through my old props and found my old acrylic contact ball.  Damn that thing is pretty.  Sometime this weekend, I'll try to renew my skills and see where I'm at (I'm talking super beginner stuff here :-)

I was asked at work if i can juggle and i try and it involves me throwing three things in the air and then not catching any of them.
except when i worked in canadian tire i would often pick up items throw er` up with a  spin such as a hammer, a knife, binoculars, walkee talkees. the hammer was good practice for the knife and the techno fragile pieces were good too because, i could push it to the limit. i`ve always had keys on carabeaners that i would throw high and catch while moving. i like to spin my keys on my finger. tools seem to be the best with a center of gravity like an axe u know the handles moving faster but around the weight of the head.

I am solo, and honestly as far as "clowning" I'm not great, I juggle largely from a sport perspective. I perform in the U.S. and it fits with my hitchhiking lifestyle, because you always make the best money in a town the first night you hit it.

My style with contact juggling is body rolling, it's very difficult. I find tricks with the contact ball take me significantly longer to master than 3 ball patterns.

Your basic fundamentals are the butterfly, and trying to stall on the inside of the arm, when you get those, then we can talk shop.

Well especially with larger numbers, there is a long phase of throwing things in the air and not catching them. The secret with your base patterns, namely cascade for odd numbers and fountain for even, is that you are just doing the same throw and catch over and over again. Also your fundamental patterns stay the same regardless of number, just more height and speed.

Just an FYI - The base pattern is called Fountain for even and Cascade for odd numbers.  Shower is a circular pattern where one hand always passes a ball to the other hand straight across and then the other hand throws that ball over the top back to the 1st hand.  Shower is the classic cartoon juggling circle pattern most people think of when they first think of juggling.  Whereas a cascade is the same throw with both hands alternating the throw to create a sort of figure eight pattern that each ball follows.

After checking out some youtube vids of the butterfly and inner arm stall, turns out I can do those (although my stall is not perfect) and have been doing those things for years with both arms.  They are pretty much my only contact juggling moves actually.  I can do butterfly from one hand then pass the ball to the back of my other hand and butterfly back with that hand... if that makes sense. :-)

Since you travel a lot seashrooms, where's your favorite place in the US for juggling?  Do you do conventions/festivals?

Thanks for catching that, the golden rule, read what I mean, not what I type.

And a shower is actually a very advanced pattern, even doing a shower with just 4 is considerably higher level than just juggling 4 in a fountain.

The next thing I recommend working on is your palm to palm and back to back transfers to get the circle going. Also start working on chest and behind the neck roles, I find they come at different speeds for different people, I'm more a chest role guy, a lot of folks I know(in so far as not a lot of people contact juggle), actually got the behind the neck rolls first. There is a big complexity difference between doing the body rolls palm up and cradle to cradle. The cradle being the back of the fingers.

I find small towns who rarely if ever see performers are my best hit. The number one rule is a new town every night.

Juggling taught me, that people who are good at something weren't just born doing it, it takes thousands of hours of hard work. I wish you luck on the long journey ahead, and I hope it brings you joy.
