Hey All.. A FOAF is filling a rubbermaid with some straw substrate, cased, and was wondering if a cool mist humid. would be good to use. Some of the teks claim that this alone is enough for the humidity, but this setup my bud wants to have would be ideally semi-automatic (air exchange, misting, etc.). If anyone has done this(for straw), I'd like to get some detail from them..thanx. He's a bit confused on how to control contams using this setup, or to even use straw..Thanx -Humpper

the cased straw should provide enough humidity by itself.so you'll either just have to fan it or you could use an aquarium pump in a filter box and have an exhaust hole covered with tyvek level with the top of the casing layer.

Yes I also have some straw casing and for their tank I'm wondering what would be the ideal home. They'll fit in a rubbermaid how about i put them in there and just fan and mist to keep the casing layer just right. sounds good?

Cased straw should be fine by itself if it's in a somewhat deep container that is covered to keep the humidity in. Even a shallow container can be used -- I have 6" deep trays that I fill with straw and then I take 4 pieces of wood and use them to hold up some plastic sheeting so the whole thing acts as a terrarium.
Straw by itself should probably be humidified, but people have had success just keeping it covered and fanning/misting and fruiting it like that.
