...And now that chance seems to be reverted to life expectancy of another 15 to 20 years--minimum.
I started taking Solvaldi, Oysio, and Ribavirin daily for Hep C virus under the auspices of doctors at scripps research institute and a pharmaceutical company. The drugs are provided free and I just have to comply with the requirements of the research.
At baseline I had a MELD score (measure of end-stage liver disease) that was looking really grim. It was based on the fact that Serum Albumin, Platelets, hemacrit, AST and ALT enzymes, bilirubin, alkaline phosphotase, chloride blood chemistry were all out of spec, and that I am/was in stage 4 fibrosis of my liver with pretty severe cirrhosis. In addition, my virus load was extremely high.
I was tired all the time--sometime I slept 24 hours straight, my sleep cycle was inverted, my skin was grey and my eyes were yellow, my legs were swelling up like balloons, and I was experiencing infections, rashes, and other odd ailments because of the disease. I was also beginning to have confusion from ammonia in my blood.
As of the 8 week mark, the virus is undetectable in my blood. All of my tests are normal except albumin, which may take a long time because of my liver, however, it is close to normal. No more confusion, gross fatigue, memory fog, aches and pains, infections and every thing else I was experiencing. And the swelling is gone in my legs. One of my female coworkers even asked what happened, she said my face look 10 years younger and my color returned.
I have to take the medicine for 24 weeks total, but considering i have almost a 100% chance of being cured, it is worth it.
But what I really wanted to say is this: I got really lucky. I didnt have the $200,000 to afford this treatment--it just came to me. So I'm feeling a lot of humbleness. And gratitude is a hard thing sometimes for people (Me) to come to grips with.
So I want to say Im sorry if I was a wanker to some people on these boards, and acted like a fucking jerk. I don't need to be a turd and thats all I can offer you. Hopefully I improve myself as a human from this experience. I have a lot of life to look forward to.
Now, I can get on with LIVING.

Congratulations on the great news! If that's not a miracle, I don't know what is. All the best.

It does. That's why I have Cirrhosis. The newest drugs target Protease and Polymerase activities specifically that the virus needs to reproduce. Thats why its so effective. They've had up to 100% cure rates in all the studies of this combination.
What's interesting is the doctor said that they are finding out, if you stop the source of liver damage, i.e. the virus, even the cirrhosis is repairable. This is a very new discovery as cirrhosis was previously thought to be irreverisble.
However, there is a process, they believe is due to collegenase, that will tear down the scar tissue in the liver and have it revert to normal--up to a certain point. But it is promising.
And no one is happier than that doctor. He's finally got chemicals and drugs that he can cure Hep C with, so everyone is lovin' it. Everyone except the insurance companies.

Not at all. The drugs where paid for by the research study. My insurance did pay for one drug. But so far the drug companies AND the state insurance exchanges are limiting the medication only to the worst cases who are at risk of imminent liver failure.
