jars vs bags?
    #21241806 - 02/07/15 11:17 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, so I have looked everywhere to find an answer to my question, and it kinda goes all over the place. so I decided to post this question exactly so I can get my answer lol.

I am wondering (sterilized jars or grow bags) I want to know a few things which of these has a lesser chance of getting comtaminated. I do know the time differences in cultivation that I don't care about because of the difference made up in end yield. Next what is easier to grow? What I'm looking for is basically as a first time what is the simplest, easiest, idiot proof method to my final product, as of know I have jars that I have inoculated and are in my incubator I'm just wondering if using bags is a simpler option to use, less contams?, any advise please thanks

Bags can be trickier to work with based on what your trying to do to them. I use jars cause they're t reusable and they fit in my SAB no problem. I will work with bags eventually, but not until I have a flow hood. I know work can be done with bags without one, but I'd rather not futz around with a big ass bag in my SAB only to have it contam. How were you planning on utilizing bags if you went that route?

Bags are great. Unless you are going to strictly use liquid culture though, they are not really in the cards for someone working out of a SAB. However, Frank used to report success inoculating bags via G2G transfer in a grow tent, which he used like a big SAB. Really though it is better to have a flowhood if you want to work with them. When working with bags you still need jars to inoculate with agar, because inoculating a bag with a wedge would take forever to colonize. Also bags are a lot trickier and less forgiving in their preparation than jars. They take a lot more grain so you have to prepare a lot more at a time, which is a big change in gears from just preparing 20-30 quarts at a time. Master jars first, then when you feel you are ready, build a flowhood and start working with bags!

:whathesaid: I like jars because if you loose one jar it's no where near as devastating as losing a full spawn bag. Plus i have a million jars and as stated above, they are easily re-used.:2cents:

In the end its up to you, good vibes & good luck

Honestly bags vs jars really just depends on what you want to do. I'd say cycling 10 tubs is pushing
the limit of working with jars alone. At that point you would probably want to consider a flowhood and
stepping up to bags. It takes a lot of spawn to keep a consistent cycle going where the plastic stays full.

So jars from the sounds of it are simple effective cheaper less chances in loosing a whole batch etc that's the answer I needed

Well bags are going to be super easy but a few good tricks.....Zip ties... glove box... and break your spawn up before you dump it into the spawn bag....no spoons.

if u see growth after 5 days, thats good.  might be 10-14 more days now.  shake at 30-40%.  not sure how u set up ur "incubator" but make sure temp is no higher than 78ish.
