Injury - When Should I Go Back?

I broke my scaphoid in my wrist April of 2014. Got bone graft surgery August 2014. Cast removed December 2014. All my motion is pretty much back except for radial deviation, which is showing good progress. My doc said I was good to go to the gym right after the cast came off, but I noticed that the snuffbox (area where scaphoid is) was still swollen and would swell after a workout; it does it after stretching too, but it relaxes later, whereas if I worked out, it would stay swollen all day. So I only lifted for a couple weeks. I didn't ever exceed 40lbs. on the dumbbells. I didn't notice pain and I was doing wrist curls to strengthen.

I've stopped working out for the last 2-3 weeks and really want to get back. anyone with experience with wrist injuries? How did your gym progress go? any pain long term afterward?

Your body heals itself; however, you have to allow it time to do so. Staying active should still be in the game plan while being careful not to overdo it.

I'm sure you are smart with your regimen, and are testing your limits. I would keep on exercising with limited reps using that wrist.

Do other exercises that don't require use of that wrist perhaps. That way you still get some exercise and you give your wrist time to heal.

I'd bet after 6 months of careful and light use of the wrist you will be able to pick up where you left off. You can't rush it.

strengthen your flexors by squeezing a tennis ball.  Extensors by wrapping a rubber band around your four fingers and thumb and opening your hand.  Supination and pronation at the elbow will be fine..  Don't do any radial deviation or wrist curls for another 3-6 months or until you can do so comfortably without pain.  It will get there.  It takes a while.

also since its chronic and not an acute injury try vascular flushing.  Alternate hot and cold backs.  Hot for 10, cold for 10 back and fourth. Cold will constrict your blood vessels and push old blood out. Heat will bring fresh healthy blood in and improve circulation.
