Pn. Cambodginiensis on Agar, red contamination?
    #21236712 - 02/06/15 07:18 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys, any help identifying this would be appreciated!
I dropped some Panaeolus Cambodginiensis var. Goliath spores on agar made in a small batch with:
4 grams DME
5 grams agar
250 grams of water

The agar was inoculated with 5 or 6 drops from a spore syringe.
Around 5 days in I noticed areas of the agar turning redder than previously but did not take a picture because I assumed it was some kind of bacteria.

6 days in and whispy mycelium became visible around the red spots. I thought okay well it's either a mold or bacterially infected Cambo myc.

That myc has thickened over the last 5 days. Is the red discoloration of the agar just something Pan Cambos do? Or am I dealing with a contaminant? Both plates I made did the same thing, the other one is just harder to get a good picture of.

I'm sorry the pictures are of poor quality.

Unless you put some kind of food coloring in your agar, it should be all white.  If it's red you have a contam.  You should only put a single drop if you can help it.  The excess moisture can increase the chances of bacterial contamination and by using a single drop it will keep the spore water from rolling all around the surface causing a cluster fuck of growth.
