Can a spray bottle contam with bacteria? and infect tubs
    #21235585 - 02/06/15 02:53 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

tl;dr: I haven't cleaned my misting bottle in over 8 months. Sometimes it has water sitting in it for weeks at a time without use. Could it be contaminated with bacteria that I'm spraying all my tubs with?

I have 5 monotubs spawned with rye berries that have been in fruiting for 4 days now. I prepped my bulk sub(cpoo, verm, coir @175F for 90minutes) a little on the drier side this time, hoping less moisture would = faster colonizing and less chance for pooling and contamination. They all colonized fine like usual but the problems always pop up once I replace the taped holes with poly, introducing FAE.

When placing the poly, I also soaked up little pools that had accumulated in the tubs. One little pool here or there was yellow, but 3-4 of the tubs smelled very healthy with crystal clear pools and pure white mycelium. I also stuffed my poly much lighter this time to try for a better pinset. A couple days into fruiting and the tubs were looking a little dry with less condensation on the sides. I know condensation isn't a direct indicator of humidity, but a cheap hygrometer was also reading around 82%.

I tried researching to find what the minimum humidity is for cubes to pin, but didn't find any exact answers. I tightened up the poly and misted all the tubs. I noticed later that night that the tub with yellow pools now had widespread yellowing across the surface. I soaked this up and have been continuing to dial in the tubs and mist.

Now this morning, about 4 hours ago when I misted, three of the tubs still looked very clean and healthy. But I just went to mist again and I noticed yellow liquid on the surface in every tub, across pretty much the entire tub. I don't understand what has happened to bring out such widespread yellow metabolites in such a short amount of time.

I assume the tubs are fighting off bacteria but I'm beyond frustrated with how they are always contaminating @ fruiting stage. I haven't washed this spray bottle in 8 months and it's had water sitting in it for months at a time sometimes. Could the spray bottle have bacteria in it that I'm spraying all over my tubs? Or any other ideas what could be going on?

clean your bottle but that is not your issue, bacteria would not be a threat at this point unless it was in your spawn.
dont sweat rh, if there is moisture on the surface you have close enough to100 percent rh on the surface where it matters

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn

I'm tired do me a favor

grr I thought I got away clean this time since all my jars smelled and looked good. Usually it's trich or something obvious that beats me. although I guess now that these tubs have bacteria they'll be more likely to catch trich? Added a pic to the OP if you have any other comments on it. Thanks for your thoughts.

Can I post this to help you understand.

There is a misconception with growing mushrooms that you need to be super clean the whole way through the grow period. Well, this may be the case in commercial grows that want to limit contaminations in the grow area, but, for me and you it is not necessary. There a billions of contaminant spore all around us and if all they had to do was land on something and grow we would see mold literally everywhere. What they do need is a place to germinate and grow. This needs to be the right conditions.

This is where your preparation and good sterile technique comes in. If you STERILISE and inoculate correctly whichever medium you are using. i.e Rye grain, and let that colonised 100% you have basically removed all the area where anything else can grow and made that the home for your mycelium. This is why 100% colonisation is so important. Mold cannot grow on this now and will be fought off by the strong mycelium.

Then When you then Make a substrate or casing layer as long as you PASTEURISE correctly- giving it heat between 140-160 'F for an hour , this again becomes contamination resistant.

So if you get these 2 right you will not get contamination until the mycelium becomes weak and can not fight off contaminates anymore. This usually comes after about 4-5 flushes into it. This is a good time to start your grow garden outdoors, if the weather is favourable. You can get a few more flushes and mold does'nt like the big bad world as much as a cosy little grow room.

If you do get problem it's usually caused right at the beginning of your grow. If you learn this quickly you will grow with confidence and move on from novice very quickly...... Happy Growing

Bacteria isn't normally a contaminant of bulk substrates, spawned or not. Although the mushrooms themselves can be infected by pathogenic bacteria. Am exception would be if your spawn was already heavily contaminated with bacteria or if your bulk substrate was not allowed to cool completely before spawning.

Metabolites on the surface could be a result of an unseen mold contaminant or from excessive incubation temperatures.

Thanks for the help guys, but I've already considered a lot of those points. The grain jars were sterilized correctly, as they sat for about 3 weeks before inoculating. I did g2g, shook at ~30%, let it colonize completely and sit there for an extra ~10 days before spawning, to be sure. I opened every jar for a sniff before and after breaking them up to be spawned. I'll admit some of them had a faintly sweet smell, but I've heard that can just be the rye. They all looked good and smelled good.

I pasteurized three different ways. Two of the bulk subs were in an oven roaster with water for about 12 hours, making sure the core was ~150 without overheating the outsides. Two were put in the oven for several hours with meat thermometers at ~170 degrees, heated by convection. The last was done in my pressure cooker with a rag on the bottom. I was pretty confident they were all well pasteurized before spawning, and I let them cool overnight with the tops open. They've been colonizing and fruiting in a basement at a cool 68 degrees. Infrared readings of the tub have never been over 74 degrees.

And it colonizes in the tub so beautifully. If the bacteria hadn't seriously infected any of my jars yet and I had properly pasteurized, shouldn't that be enough to hold off any traces of it? Looks like snow white until I put them in fruiting, then everything starts going bad.

Not that I know of. There shouldn't be any sweet smell if it's fully colonized.

IME a slight sweet smell in a spawn jar is usually from Trichoderma.

Trich usually smells like pine-sol to me, or some cleaning agent that I can't quite put my finger on.

The sweet smell I was getting a hint of was very subtle, almost placebo. They all still smelled like mushrooms. Idk...
