Understanding what spawn does (in terms of genetics)
    #20957111 - 12/10/14 12:06 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

I posted a brief comment about this, got a brief answer (in the MushCult > strain thread. Since it gets a lot of views)but I've always wondered. I understand that with MS inoculation, it's basically a random generation of spores with a few set traits (like a Cambodian or B+ grow might be similar but not the same as the one before... especially the more domesticated the strain).

But what I've been wondering about now is spawn. Once rye (for example) is inoculated and is 100% colonized, and is mixed with pasteurized Coir/verm/gypsum, let's say there are 2 quarts of spawn both inoculated from the same syringe, that are mixed into one tub. Do they each have their own first flush for example? (I was told they fruit independently, instead of any kind of combination of genes). So basically these two types of mycellium are completely independent from each other, even though they're from the same syringe, and they take over the bulk sub independently, and give off 2 kinds of fruit? Now, if this is true, does this mean mixing 4 different spawns will have 4 different kinds of mycellium fruiting independently? And this would also mean that if using either just one quart, or G2G, the genes would be the same and would be the opposite, meaning if you had 4 quarts all from the same G2G source would they all act as one and have the same genetics? (Also, it doesn't have to be grain2grain transfer, could also be GLC, LC, or Agar, anything with one type of genetic code)

OR am I wrong and even G2G/LC has different genetics in every jar?

Hm that is contrary to everything I thought I knew about mushroom genetics. So a G2G or LC is as close genetically as MS anyway?

So is the only way to clone spawn to do a tissue culture? I hear that is direct cloning...is that not true either? So what's the deal, if an educated shroomer comes across this post

Thus the good practice of isolation. To get desired genetic trates.

So really the only difference between MS and G2G is time?

One thing for sure is it seems there are much less mutants and almost identical mushrooms (IME) when just using a single quart of the same spawn, as opposed to mixing up a bunch of jars into one tub.

It's bright and blue and shimmering.
Grinning wide
And comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes.

Prying open MY third eye
