Chemical sterilization
    #2123363 - 11/19/03 06:33 PM (13 years, 17 days ago)

I have seen some people post about how thier friends and pets sterilize tools via chemical sterilization . I am wondering which would be better , Alcohol , a bleach solution , or a lysol solution ? How does a chemical sterilization compare to a heat sterilization ie a red heat ? I know that in the hospital lots of stuff is sterilized via a bleach solution .Would a glove box with an influx of a mist of the above work to keep a more sterile enviroment ? Any thoughts would be appreciated on this topic .

No -- nothing in a hospital is sterilized with bleach -- maybe sanitized, but not sterilized -- big difference. They'd use an autoclave to sterilize instruments and stuff.

If you want to use chemicals alcohol evaporates really quickly and it won't ruin surfaces, but bleach is supposed to kill things better. The bleach won't evaporate, though. If you're really impatient you can just dip the tool in alcohol and then burn the alcohol off -- I do this at work sometimes.

If you heat something up, though, until it's red hot, everything on it will be dead. This also doesn't involve chemicals, but you have to cool it down on something sterile -- like sterile (uninoculated) agar. This is probably the best way, just so you avoid exposing the mycelium to hazardous chemicals.

No medical institution is allowed to use bleach anymore, to my knowledge. Quatranary(sp?) disinfectants are used to clean surfaces, with special -cides used in specific high-risk areas. Bleach isn't used in sterilizing instrumentation for the operating room. 91% Isoprophyl alcohol works wonders.

Scrub your glovebox with hot soapy water, then bleach water. Dry, mist with lysol. Put the lid on. Wait 10 minutes. Use.

I use turn the fan on, put all the stuff in there, spray it down with lysol, put the lid back on, wait for 10 minutes and then use.
