rhizomorphic turned fuzzy?

This is the first transfer from a culture started from grains. As you can see, they started out rhizomorphic then turned fuzzy. Is this normal?

I'm definitely confused Lines of separation between sectors or mycelium structure? What happened to the rhizomorphs? Will the mycelium be cottony from here on out? I was under the impression that I was supposed to keep transferring the most rhizo mycelium until I had a mono culture? Sorry for all the questions but this is my first time doing transfers. Thanks for the help

It's actually one and the same. They won't grow into each other while they have a choice, so they stop when they encounter another strain and try to find a new direction to expand. This is the same property that causes sectoring.
IMO, the best way to get good genetics is to clone a nice fruit from a good cluster and then pick the faster genetics, not to take grain and put it to agar. You can do it your way, but it's going to take a LOT more trial and error.

Gotcha and thanks! I just did some grains bc I had some ready to go..along with some spores from prints and syringes. Just trying to get my feet wet and to learn anything I can, hands on. I will def clone (at least attempt to )when I have some nice fruits to work with! As far as the cottony myc, will the rhizomorphs come back or do I just continue to transfer as is?

They don't typically even show up until many transfers have been made, but they'll return once the number of strains piled up there is reduced.

This is very good info man definitly clicked, think I understand sectoring a little better

So this is the second transfer of nice rhizomorphic PE mycelium (as seen on wedge) and it also turned fuzzy. Sorry for more questions but I'm still confused on how or why it changed? Did I transfer a fuzzy sector along with the rhizo and the fuzzy took over? I'm not seeing sectors here so is this now a mono culture? How would you recommend I proceed from here?

It probably isn't an isolate. If it were me, I'd put that back to grains, fruit it and then clone the biggest pin from the first cluster you see.

Yeah, because 11 days ago it was the transfer from a culture started from grains. Also sectors at 6 and 9 o'clock.

i get the time part, but maybe its my phone. i don't see any sectoring. i would still go with VDG's advice and toss it on grain.

Almost positive that's a sector at 9. Don't see any others, though.

The other one I'm looking at is from 5-7, but admittedly it's pretty faint.

if anything 6 o clock looks like the TINEST bit different, but its hard to zoom w/o getting more blurry.

So aside from the sectoring....I'm still trying to understand the rhizo turned fuzzy mycelium? In every video/ tek I've seen, they say to continue transfering the fastest, healthiest, most rhizomorphic sectors. All my plates have turned fuzzy so, how do I do that when the rhizo goes away? Have I (almost) isolated a non-rhizomorphic strain here?

If you put that culture on a plate with lower nutes it would probably be rhizo as all hell man. Im sure someone else will chime in better, but I say just pick healthy growth
I wouldn't get too hung up on if its rhizo or not because the culture might look totally different depending on the media its growing on
