I must say that it's a relief to hear that it's not just me and that there are indeed many fewer mushrooms this year than last year, even in the East where I live. Last year, I was able to walk in any grassy area and find mushrooms (inedible, but still, it was exciting)every few feet, and this year nothing but 2 patches of Agaricus. I did find some pretty (and deadly) Amanita Virosa specimens in the forest, but the fact that the number of mushrooms in wide open grass fields was much higher last year indicates to me that overall, there are many fewer mushrooms this year. Mushrooms would only fruit in the shady forest this year.
MJ, how do you go about finding clearcuts? Are they usually publicly accessible or they're private to the logging company?

Psillygirl, yesterday I spent 6 hours checking 13 sports where shrooms should have been popping uyp and they werent. Your patch is probably one of only a few int he region still producing cyans, but then again i do not thik you will get many.
I did manage to picked a few fresh ounces of blue ringers but did not have my camera with me since I hate to take my digital out in the rain. have a shroomy day.

Weyerhauser has three legal ones and you buy a shroom picking permit from them for Thirty-five dollars for the season. However, They may be clear-cuts with only edibles in them and that would not necessarily mean that they were/are P. pelliculosa patches at the ones they charge to go into. It is usually chantrelle pickers and Europeans who rent the clearcuts from Weyerhauser. mj. You just have to go to the forests areas of the state and drive around looking for logging roads that are open and get out before three o clock before the gates are locked for the day. mj

actually my "patch" was "patches". i guess it was about 4 overall areas we checked and there were pins. however, one of my biggest patches from earlier this fall is not fruiting. must be hit or miss, but i hope you're patches start producing something for ya!! good luck!

MJ, I live by hundreds of acres of Weyerhauser land. Most of the clear cuts I've seen on the logging roads were probably 5-10 years ago, none look too recent. Would you expect to find muchrooms still growing in these older ones or would I need to look for a more recent clear cut?

The clear cuts have to be 2 to four years old for the pelliculosas to grow whent he logs are being logged out and the alder trees start to sprout along the roads and in the pilings ans slashings. That is where the peelliculosas began to gerow. chech the pictures at my s ite in the species section under P. pelliculosa
