First desiccant chamber. Will it work?
    #21228996 - 02/05/15 01:26 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

So basically i just took an old ice cream pack, took some aluminum foil which i poked holes into and made kinda like a little bowl with it around the top of the ice cream pack. Will this setup work? I've been drying my mushrooms for about 24h with a fan already.

So, the silica gel cat litter goes on the bottom, and the shrooms on top of the foil.

I'm not sure where you live, but merely fan drying often sucks because the relative humidity in your area is too high to get them absolutely cracker dry (thus the need for a desiccant chamber).

If you just buy a dehydrator you can just toss them in a mason jar after and they'll keep forever.

Anyway, if you're just going to leave them on top of the foil, no, it won't work. You need your chamber to be airtight. A Tupperware container that won't spill water out of it is airtight. If you can fit an airtight lid on top of that with the foil still on it, it should work.

Before I bought a dehydrator, I did the following for a quick desiccant chamber:

1. Get airtight Tupperware bowl/jar/whatever.
2. Make an outline of the inside of the container on a piece of cardboard.
3. Cut out the cardboard so it will fit inside the Tupperware relatively tight.
4. Drill a bunch of small holes in the cardboard so it's breathable.
5. Dump Damprid of Silica on the bottom of the Tupperware, drop in the holey cardboard, and put your dry mushrooms on top.

This will keep them fresh. But really, just buy a dehydrator.

I just get a tall Tupperware container, pour desiccant on the bottom and put my slight fan dried mushrooms in a pint jar and seal the container up. 36 hours later they're dry as can possibly be

I live in Sweden, dunno about the RH here. I have a friend who just puts his mushrooms on a piece of cardboard and let them dry in his kitchen cabinets, gets cracker-dry. My mushrooms seem to be almost cracker dry, atleast the smaller sized ones. Most people seem to use desiccant chambers so i'd like to give it a go, even though fan-drying would probably get them cracker-dry. Found some silica gel kitty litter at home aswell so i didn't even have to leave the house. Now the hunt for an airtight tupperware container begins..

Is it enough to poke small holes with a needle in the piece of cardboard, as i did with the aluminum foil, or should i use something a bit bigger, like a screwdriver?

I will def invest in a dehydrator in time for my next flush. I just started with all this shroom-stuff and had no idea that having this stuff was useful. Will try to get my hands on a couple of mason jars for storage aswell.

EDIT: Found a container, no water dripped out when shaken violently and held up-side-down. Will this work you think?

The key to drying is quickness. You want them cracker dry as fast as possible and then stored in something airtight ASAP. A bunch of holes with a needle should work. Honestly the holes might not even be needed, I just figured it'd help with the airflow, but if it's airtight and there's silica in there, you should be good either way. A mesh screen to separate them would also work.

I would say most people don't use desiccant chambers actually. They might use a bit of desiccant in a packet to toss in with their jars or storage containers, but the actual chambers are usually for people without dehydrators to get them to the final step of cracker dry.

Edit: Yes, that looks perfect. Just have a layer of silica beneath it and toss your mushrooms on top of the cardboard. But be very careful that you have them very dry before going in. If you toss them in with enough moisture left in them, they will use up all of the silica and not be cracker dry. The desiccant is for the very last bit of moisture or to hold them as cracker dry as failsafe.

Thank you for the very useful information! Much appreciated

Could i use this container for storage too? Like i said, i don't have any mason jars, yet. Will probably order some today if i can afford it.

Yes, anything airtight will work great for storage. I buy big gallon jars with the snap lid and tape a desiccant pack on the bottom of the lid just in case. I've yet to notice any different in cracker-dry quality.

Just buy a second hand food dehydrator, they are cheap as shit and so simple to use. Turn them on, check back later. Bob's your uncle!
