FC Problem

So here I am, drilling holes in my tote and my drill dies. I cannot charge the battery because the charger is broken
I got most of the holes drilled, with the exception of the bottom of the tote and the lid.
My question is this: how important is it that I put the holes in the top and bottom? The video I watched said drill LOTS of holes and the dude in the video did the bottom and top so I'm guessing you're supposed to, but can I get by without it?

It will be okay for a while but you should try to get to drilling the other holes as soon as you can. You would be able to fruit and everything in it, it just won't be as efficient and troubleshooting will mostly get people telling you to drill more holes.

Hey thanks for the quick response! I will be able to finish drilling the holes later today, so I'm glad it won't be an issue

No, you can't get by without it. Your cakes will not receive enough FAE without holes in the bottom and they'll suffer. I mean, a day will be fine, but get them drilled immediately. Don't put perlite in the tub before drilling holes in the bottom.

Oops, already put the perlite and cakes in. I mean I should be able to get my hands on a drill in a few hours though. Is it really going to be much of an issue?

Your cakes will be fine, but now you just have to do a ton of extra work in dumping out the perlite somewhere and then drilling the holes the next day. I would've just left the cakes wherever until the next day. But whatever, as long as you drill the holes in tomorrow.

What if I just drill the holes while the perlite is still inside? I loaded approximately 3.25 in. of perlite, so what if the drill bit goes into it a little? I suppose there is a bit of water that would drain out of each hole though lol

If thers standing water,it will drain out. The drillbit might creat some dust when it hits the perlite and it may cause the holes to get cloggged. It will be fine for a short a day or so, but you need to get those holes in there, especially the bottom ones.
Also, 4-5 inches of perlite is much better.

Heat up a phillips head screw driver and melt the holes if you're in a bind.

Thanks for the input! I will try to hit the perlite as little as possible to avoid getting clogged holes.
If I put in additional perlite, where would be a good place to place the cakes? Could I just put them in my incubator? It is of suitable temperature (75) and it has a lid so there would be minimal airflow. Drilling the holes and adding the perlite shouldn't take longer than 15 minutes by my estimation.

I used an old soldering iron to melt my holes. I don't know what it would do to the perlite, but it melts through really quickly and the holes are dang near 1/4" with just that. My drill's getting weak so I did that to make my pilot holes then was going to run the drill bit through each hole, but it was already nearly the same size.
I hope that helps.

Thank you sir for your suggestion, but unfortunately I do not own a soldering iron.
I should be able to stop by a buddies house and borrow his drill for tonight, so I think I'll be okay!

Dude, just set the cakes on the table next to you or something. They'll be fine for a bit while you drill the holes. You'll also not be able to avoid hitting the perlite, lol, it's everywhere.
I would advise against melting the plastic as that will almost certainly take forever, smell terrible, and produce bad fumes. Just go dump all the perlite into a large plastic bag, drill the holes in the bottom, and then dump them back in.

Hmm you're probably right, this will most likely be the easiest, mess-free way to go about it.

Honestly if the lid itself doesn't have holes drilled in it, I'd just flip the entire thing upside with the lid on (on top of a garbage bag or something) and then start drilling the bottom like that.

Lol I already got everything done exactly how you suggested. Took the cakes and perlite out, drilled the holes in the bottom as well as the lid, and re added the perlite (along with about an inch more) and the cakes. All done!

That's what's up. Don't forget the foil or jar lids separating the cakes from the perlite.

I have not seen any signs of pinning yet, is this bad? I feel like there is not enough humidity in the FC.
Also, I am not using a light, I was just letting sunlight come in through the window which is not far from the FC.
If I drilled too many holes will I need to mist more?
Also when I did the roll, the verm did not want to stick to the cakes. Now when I mist the verm want to fall off.
I am pretty worried that either there is not enough humidity in the FC, there is not enough light, and about the verm not wanting to stick to the cakes.
If anyone could give me some guidance that would be awesome
