hamloaf's Psilocybe Cyanescens 2015 (a work in progress).
    #21227179 - 02/04/15 06:23 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Inoculated a some petri dishes a few months back with some Ps. Cyan spores.  Expanded upon the clean culture generating clean grain spawn.

Took the grains spawn to the next step today, and spawned the grain spawn into 8 quart spawn bags of sterilized, hydrated wood chip substrate.

Each bag was inoculated with a full quart of colonized Ps. Cyan grains spawn after the sweet mushroomy mycelium scent was detected coming from the jars of spawn.

Had 4 quarts of colonized spawn, so 4, 8 quart, or 2 gallon woodchip substrate bags were generated all together.

This is enough spawn to make 4 large patches if said patches are began in the beginning of spring.  The later in the year that patches are created, the more colonized spawn will be needed to create the patch if you want them fruiting by fall.

Don't know where exactly I will be over the next four months, so it will be interesting to see where these patches end up.  The goal is to have all four patches spawned outdoors this year with each patch in a different state.  States in mind are, Colorado, California, Oklahoma, and not sure of another yet, but we will see where the year takes us.  This is going to be fun.  More to come!

-update Feb. 16th, 2015.

It's time to get your cultures going if you want to be able to plant/lay your beds by spring, kids!

The mycelium is colonizing the woodchips nicely.

This is the point of colonization that the decision to shake was made at.  Bags were shook this afternoon.

The sweet mushroomy scent of clean mycelium was detected upon the breaking up of the mycelium.  If all goes well (and I am projecting all will go good), next stop, these woodchips will be ready to spawn into outdoor beds in a few short weeks.

March 6th, 2015

Well, I'v got 32 quarts of fully colonized Psilocybe Cyanescens spawn on woodchips - 4 bags @ 8 quarts (2 gallons) a piece.  Talked to an old friend from high school who is now a real estate appraiser and he said that he has several plots of land that I can make patches out of on, and granted me access to do so.  So I went and got the potting soil and a shovel.  Today is the first day in weeks the sun is out and snow isn't falling, so when my bones warm up, off I go to plant some patches.

Got plans to head to Colorado in a month, taking one of these 8 quart bags of fully colonized woodchips and starting multiple patches out there.  On the same trip, I may head to Northern California.  If the going to Northern California transpires, I will be taking an 8 quart bag of colonized woodchips up there and plant patches everywhere.  One of the Northern Californian patches in  particular will go on my buddies 5 acre legal ganja farm up there.  Looks like the goals and objectives of making patches in all the spots I wanted to is going to culminate.  I'm excited.

Dug a hole and sandwiched a layer of colonized woodchip spawn between 4 cubic feet of Bacto brand "organic", light, high-quality potting soil.  I have documented with pictures the procedures in which this bed was generated for all of you analytically and inquisitive minded folks alike.  Also, when I was a newer spore, one thing I never found, but always wanted to see was a step by step instructional over how to construct an outdoor patch.

let the plantings begin!

Planted the first patch of the year yesterday.  Grabbed the shovel, soil and spawn.  Went out and found a nice shady area under a tree and dug a hole.  Wasn't going for anything specific hole-size-wise.  Just a hole approx 8" deep by about 4x4' wide & tall.  Dug the hole, cleaned away debris, and leveled out the bottom.

The bag was then cut open and given a sniff.  Nothing but the scent of sweet mushroom mycelium was detected.  The sweet mushroomy scent is an even further green light to proceed to the next step of the cultivation process, and a good omen.  The entire contents of the bag was laid out over the bottom soil layer "frosting-layer-style".  The amount of spawn ended up being just enough spawn to evenly dispense over the entire patch perfectly.

Next the other bag of soil was popped open, and laid out over top of the spawn layer.  The addition of the other bag of potting soil topped-off, and level-out the hole with the top of the ground, perfectly.

Watered patch.

Finally, the patch was covered with freshly pasteurized wheat straw left over from the spawning to bulk of blue oyster mushroom mycelium grain spawn.

The wet season is coming, so it's not projected that needing to do any watering will be required until summer.  The humidity is so high around here during the spring.  I am confident that the substrate will remain hydrated until summer.  Periodic checkings of the patch will be employed like ritual to make sure the patch stays hydrated, and no animals use the patch as a bathroom, or go digging the patch up.

If any of the aforementioned problems arise, the patch will be covered with a thick sheet of plastic fitted with slits cut into it for gas exchange.

Update - 3/23/2015

Patch maintenance.

Went to visit patch today to check over-all performance.

Criteria:
-Check how fast substrate is drying up.
-Check for wildlife interruptions.

Sure as shit (no pun intended).
An animal has been poking, prodding and SHITTING in my psilo cyan patch.  :mad2:

Looks like raccoon turds.

Little bastards.

Removed the turd.
Flattened the straw back out with a stick.

Upon redistributing the makeshift wheat straw casing cover it was noted that the soil and casing were drying right up.
The patch was then watered.

A sheet of plastic with slits cut into the plastic was placed over the patch.
The plastic is being held down by some cut up tree branch debris.
The plastic was laid down to keep pests out of the patch.
The plastic was also laid down to keep in moisture.

Slits were cut so the substrate can exchange gasses.

Got the trip to Colorado planned out for VERY soon.
Gonna take one of these bags of colonized woodchips, a shovel and 2 bags of soil.
Gonna make a patch or two up there.
Looks like the plantings of these patches in different states is coming together nicely.

A mix of apple, chery, pecan, hicory, and mesquite.

The major reason for the varied types of hardwoods used is for the health of the mycelium.  Mycleium prefers to get it's nutrition from varying sources of nutrition rather than just one source of nutrition.
