Verm provides:
Aeration moisture retention as well as:

Contrary to popular belief, mushrooms do 'eat' verm as those who have fruited pf cakes over several flushes have I'm sure noticed. The cakes shrink in size by far more than the amount of rice flour in the cake, thus it becomes clear that the mycelium is consuming the verm too. I have no idea 'what' it is the mycelium is eating in the verm or why, but it is.
Mix the verm with solid food such as grains, manure or coir, and you'll be happy, I promise. RR

Fruit it, but don't expect much. Next time, mix some manure or coir with that verm. RR

Wiki says Vermiculite is full of magnesium and iron. A quick google search tells me that mushrooms are a good source of iron and magnesium. I'm not certain if cubes specifically use a lot of magnesium and iron, I'll need to research that some more, though I'm not too inclined to.
So vermiculite isn't just an additive, it is essential to the mushrooms growth

Please post results! I wouldn't mind cutting down on the verm I use. 42 $ for a man sized bag isn't the issue, it's the constant visits to the hydro store I would like to cut down on.
