So to start off, this is my first post, but i have been a long time reader for information. I do however have a few questions, but i will start with a brief background info.
I am switching from PF Tek (done a few of these and with out too much trouble) to WBS/Bulk. I just had some troubles with a PF Tek/Bulk (crumble of cakes to bulk manure and coir). Trouble i had was that i used my germination heating mat, not realizing how hot was actually going to get, when i measured it the temperature was way too high 47c/116f. Im remedying that tomorrow with a heat mat thermostat tomorrow. I do understand that this bulk is now garbage and i have tossed it into the compost.
About 2 days ago i did receive my new spores, In anticipation for that I did already make some liquid culture by using 250ml water:2tsp honey ratio. I then injected 1cc of spores into each jar. It does look like in 2 days I do have some cloudy substances at the bottom of the jars, which i have swearled around.
So my questions are:
1) I've been reading about wild bird seed and from the reading on the cleaning procedures and preparation to make it at field capacity for moisture it seems that you are removing all most all of the other seed types. From what i understand you really are for the most part keeping the millet. A local store sells bulk bags of white millet. Is white millet by itself acceptable for the WBS tek?
2) How long/how much cloudy substance are you needing before you can use the Liquid Culture?
3) If i use home made self healing jars, do i also need to have air exchange via PolyFill stuffed holes, or will the liquid culture grow on the WBS with no exchange at all? Also can i use Synthetic Filter Discs instead, or are these to be used only on the Liquid Culture jars?
4) Once I do inject the WBS jars using the liquid culture; in ideal conditions; what is the approx time for 100% inoculation, and how long after that before i can birth to Bulk Substrate?
5) It seems that there is a wide range between teks for what to incubate the bulk substrate at. Would the 80-85f range be the accepted range at this point?
6) Is a 1:3 ratio of WBS to Bulk substrate a good ratio?

1. yes u can use white millet by itself. i would make sure its NOT hulled, but pasty white uses hulled millet. if u have never prepped grain before, i would suggest getting millet UNHULLED. i think it would be less likely to turn to mush for a beginner grain prep person.
2.u want it too look like this
3. GE in grains jars is mandatory for qts. GE in LC is...well...theres some debate i guess. i would put GE ports for ur LC though if it was me.
4. 4-7 days depending on how much u injected, and how fast the culture is, and how good ur grain prep was. once ALL jars are at 100%, u can spawn to bulk. if one or some finishes before the others, just leave em till the slower ones catch up.
5. i never temped my bulk tubs. i wouldn't want them to go above 80 though. in my ideal world, all jars and bulk substrates would incubate at 75. that rarely can happen. get creative with ur room, use the spots near ur windows as colder spots when u wanna stall something.
6. in open air spawning, anything from 1:1, and 1:6 has been ok IME.
