Popcorn, strange smell??

This is my first attempt at using popcorn. I let the popcorn soak for 24 hours, boiled for an hour and then drained for an hour. I filled the jars 3/4 with popcorn and used polyfill for a filter. Then i PC'd jars for 70 minutes and let cool over night. The jars were innoculated in a home made glove box with 2cc from an EQ multispore syringe, and then placed in a incubator at a fluctuating tempurature between 78-85. It has been 7 days since innoculation and no signs of mycelial growth. There is a strange smell when i open the incubator, but there is no signs of any contamination yet. Is it normal for popcorn to smell bad during incubation? I cant explain the smell, but its not good. By what i have read, I belive there shold be some mycelial growth by now. I could be wrong, I am still learning.

Simplemachine, I concur.
What size jars? 70 minutes may not have been long enough in the PC. Maybe try increasing PC times to 100+ minutes, thats after desired pressure has been reashed.

Hopefully its just a normal unfamialier grain smell... however if its not.. Someone has also had issues with bacteria when first attempting grains. Some of the things that helped remedy them were: Making sure the grain was not overly moist on the outside. (well drained -- day or so -- and if felt too dry just shot some water over it with the sink sprayer and then dried like another hour) Longer PC times!!!! -- High stress on this. 90+ min -- even with half pints. Cook that shit! Making the grain slightly dry and than using more solution to bring the content back up. Cooling the jars completely to prevent excess condensation. The smells that Someone had smelled from sweet, to ammoniatic.. Anything that doesn't smell like the grains cooking up in the PC or slightly off from that can't be good -- even if they at first do smell good. Hopefully all is well. peace

At the point of innoculation i recognized no smell. The smell only came after incubating for 2 days. I have smelled it a few times since i made the post and i think it might just be what the grain smells like. This is my first try at a grain. Time will only tell....

seems to me that grains shot with a multispore syringe can take a long time, which is why liquid myc is always used round these parts or grain to grain. but if you can do grain without contams in the jar you can do liquid myc.
search it or PM me i have nice details i wrote up so as not to forget.
as for the smell i just am not sure, hard to figure out without smelling myself.
my hot spot never smells like much of anything so it does not seem like a good thing.

Next time try this with your syringes...
take 1tsp of honey, put it in 1 pint of water, mix then pull it into the syringes sterilize for 20-30 minutes take it off the stove. cool down, and use your general syringe tek.
full colonization in a few days (for quart jars)

I boil some popcorn for around 30 min and then let it gradually cool and sit overnight. Whenever I smell the popcorn after it has been sitting all night is not the most pleasant smell ever, but not like a fart or anything. The next day I boil it again until I can smash them with my fingers, but not by any means mushy.
Usually only drain for around 2-4 hours in a pillow-case at the end of which I ring it out really well and rub the kernals with the dry parts of the pillow case. Works pretty good.

My colonized popcorn always smelled like grape.
