Sleeping in your car

Has anyone ever been hassled while sleeping in their car? I'll be living on the road for a while, and sleeping in my car is the plan if I'm not in a place to pitch a tent.
Anyone ever been hassled for sleeping somewhere they shouldn't? Where's the best place to sleep in the back of your car? Truck stops, rest areas?

Id feel alright about truck stops but dont put yourself in to much of a secluded spot (lot lizards are weeeird)
Some rest areas have signs that say no overnight parking but I believe thats typically for truck drivers.
But really a rest are is for rest. I dont think you will get much hassle unless you are there every night.
Dont sleep in your car outside a bar. Thats asking for trouble.

I'm mainly worried about cops, and getting in trouble for one thing or the other. But I guess I should be worried about crazies too!

I was hassled by cops sleeping in the passenger seat of a friends car outside a bar once. Didnt help that I was bombed and flipped the cop off but I think they look for that sort of thing.
Truck stops "should" be alright. You can get small booklets from TSs that tell you where they all are.

I always sleep in my car after going out or if I’ve been to parties. It avoids drink driving and I have never been bothered. If you have to do it every day, then moving your car to a different location each time will help people becoming inquisitive and potentially becoming a problem.

I've done it, and been slightly hassled; mainly just to make sure I was not passed out drunk. If you have been drinking, leave your car keys outside of the car before sleeping.

Quite a few people have been hassled / busted for sleeping in cars. Some local laws, for example Santa Cruz, California forbid it.
You are more likely to get away with it in places that police don't patrol very often.
Another method is to park your car, then walk a quarter mile or so and camp out. That way if the cops come by, there is no one to talk to and they have to either ticket you, wait for you or leave.
Living in a car definitely puts you at a higher risk of police contact and arrest. If you have something illegal, it might be a good idea to hide it somewhere that is not in your car.

What happens in the US if you're legitimately too tired to continue driving? Like, falling asleep at the wheel tired and presenting a safety risk to other drivers?
Could you just say you've drove all day n night and feel you'd be endangering others by carrying on any more? And hope you're not hit by the same cop twice or recorded in some way.

Walmart will let you camp in their parking lot
Pretty safe to since there is always people around and lights.
Just move your car daily and you should be fine.
Don't sleep with the keys in the ignition because if a cop comes up it's considered a traffic stop.
Also I believe they'd need a warrant to search the trunk

Once after my car was stolen, I got a call from the police in a different county, it was there so i went to get it. When i got there i realized the theives had driven all my gas out so i was stuck until i could make arrangements the following morning. I decided to sleep in my car in parked at the gas station(thats as far as the wrecker would take it). That night i was awoken by a police officer who told me to get out while holding a flashlight beam on my eyes, blinding me. He commanded me to put my hands behind my back so he could handcuff me, i complied. He then told me to lay on my face while he searched my car, because he insisted i had "dope". he was so sarcastic about it "Oh, so if i find it, its not yours right? Your car was stolen?" i even had the police report number in my pocket. After he came up empty handed, he had me sit on the curb for half an hour while he verified everything i said, at least he gave me a smoke at the end I dont feel safe sleeping in my car anymore, at least not around rural/residential areas.

You must live in Europe
Here in the states they can't do that as easily.
As long as your keys aren't in the ignition it's not a traffic stop it becomes a residence and they need a warrant

Done it many many many many many times. They won't fuck with you. I've seen people live in walmart parking lots for over 6 months in college before.

Constitution?
Right to be secure in your own papers and property
Yea they still do it all the time I've been illegally searched before.
Fuckers started destroying my car and did some pretty nice damage to it
When they didn't find anything they told me I was under arrest cause they'd found something.
I said bullshit and asked to see what they'd found and they promptly released me

You don't really have many rights when you are in a car. The cops can just walk up to you and start investigating.
They are either going to do a terry stop and start pawing through your stuff, or call a drug dog which will false alert and start digging through your stuff. Either way, if you have anything illegal with you, you are likely to end up in jail with no valid legal defense.
Neither of these things are an issue when you are in a house, so people who live in houses have an infinitely smaller chance of ending up in jail than people who live in cars.

Yup that's what they'll do exactly
That's what they did to me when I was a teen.
Pretty effective tactic.
If you're gonna live in your car I suggest getting some of that cover scent or deer urine at the store.
Spray it on your tires it'll drive any dog fuckin batshit

I'm thinking about getting a dog. It'll scare away the crazies and the cops. I'm leaving town tomorrow and as of right now I don't have anything illegal, just some squeaky clean glass. So I guess I'll need to say goodbye to the shroomery again for a while.
