Azures?
    #2120617 - 11/18/03 05:21 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I was at Long Beach today and took a look in the dune grass. I spotted these growing deep down, near the base of the grass. I'm not sure if they are Azures but they turned a distinct blue as soon as I picked them. I'm taking a spore print right now.

Cap is an orangish, brownish color and slimy. I can see strations towards the edge.

Gills were a dark color but turned blue almost immediately.

Stem is what confuses me. It is hollow, thick and very fiberous. The color is sort of a translucent yellow but parts of it have bruised blue. From pics I have seen Azures stem is thin and white.

These pics are of them still wet. I need to find a better way to transport mushrooms. I used a plastic bag and they decided to break up on me.

PS: Also saw three Amanitas just off the dunes under some trees. Two were pretty big but one was gigantic. Cap had to be 8" around. Didn't have my camera or I would of gotten pics.

nope, hygrocybe conica, witches hat, not edible, possibly poisonous, sorry
the bluing effect you witnessed wasnt blue at all was it? more of a black, when you see alot of pics of azures turning almost black it can be confusing what "blue" is, but i assure you, the reaction in hygrocybe conica is a blackening, and no psilocybin is present

I don't know too much about these, but it appear's as if hygrocybe conica possess yellowish gills, while DAK's appear much darker...

I can assure you they are not Azurescens tho

It looks blue to me, but I'm new to this.

Are there any others that grow in dune grass besides witches hats and Azures?

I dunno mitch, I see some definate bluing there and the gill color is off for H. conica.

A spore print is essential in this case. Take a spore print and let us know how it turns out.

If they were in the dune grass, they could most likely be a Ps. Azurescens...They look right to me, but, they very well could be Hygrocybe...even though I find those mostly in the forest.

Tell us how the print comes...and if its a purple-brown, then you probably found what you were looking for!

I dunno, the blueing would definately suggest that it is a psilocybe of some sort, however those yellow hollow stems don't appear to confirm this. I'm anxiously awaiting the sporeprint.

Thanks.

methinks the color in the pic is off a bit, as the gills themselves have a blueish hue to them.

Agreed, he said the gills turned bluish upon handeling. Witches hat doesn't do that does it?

mixed with white gills and stem, a dark purple could have a bluing effect.

I'm still waiting for the spores to drop. What color are the spores from witches hat?

hygrocybe conica also bruises black, i know, ive bruised them, the gills can be quite dark even before bruising in older specimines, then bruise very dark with handling.
the mushrooms here are hygrocybe conica, not azures.
if the gills arent to damaged for it, the spore print should be white.

the translucent yellow stipe is a dead giveaway in this particular situation. a very variable species, sometimes the blackening reaction can look blue, noste these photos from mykoweb and other sites

azures are not what you would call common in washington state anyways. as far as i know they only occur naturally in oregon.
other intensely bluing psilocybes that are in washington can also be ruled out by the texture of the stipe.

Sorry, but my vote goes to rotten Witches Hats. Look at the one second from left, and look at the picture with the Japanese writing posted by MitchNast.

Still no spore print. Is it possible they all dropped on the ride home?

I also thought that Azures were common on coast up to Westport? LB is only 20 miles from Astoria.
