First time growing gourmet mushrooms
    #21203371 - 01/30/15 04:57 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

So I just inoculated some logs with plug spawn (mistake and shiitake). I have 2 3 foot logs about 4-5 inches diameter and 3 2-1/2 inch diameter 5 inch long plugged with maitake. I also have about 5 more of the smaller pieces inoculated with shiitake. I intend to bury the big maitake logs in the woods somewhere and bury the 3 other ones in a pot. Would potting mix and manure help or does it matter?
I was also going to put the shiitake logs in some kind of homemade humidity tent or set them in the window sill in a shallow dish with a bit of water. It gets hot where I live in the summer and since the site I baught the plugs from said they like cold weather so maybe I could leave them outside during the colder months. Also, leaving logs close to the house is pretty much out of the question since I have a dog that pisses on anything shiny (car rims) or anything taller than a grain of sand. He is in an electric fence type thing so I MIGHT be able to fix that.

if you put the shiitake logs in a tent inside then they will probably get some kind of contam. I live in montana and it is below 0 in the winter and upper 90s sometimes low 100s in the summer. Mine do fine outside in the shade. Started some in april and had fruits by september, I have no experience with the miatake. Seems like it might be a good idea to burry all the logs a bit if you are in a exstream hot location to keep them cool. Dont know how well pink oysters like logs but i know they like warm temps and i have elm oysters on logs and they love it. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in. I hope that helps.

Yes this helped. I have a similar climate to you if not the same. I live in Georgia southwest of atlanta. I also have a small pic pipe sticking out of my house in 2 places that drips with lots of water during the summer and the water is really warm. I'm pretty sure it's from the AC unit. If I buried the logs there would that be okay? Only problem with that I see is the dog.

I think you should be fine as long as its not constantly dripping on the logs. If you are doing that just to keep them moist then I wouldn't worry about it with the humidity as high as it is down there. I wouldn't worry about the dog until it starts fruiting then maybe a small fence around it so he doesn't piss on the fruits.
