Mushrooms in my backyard?
    #2120403 - 11/18/03 06:07 PM (13 years, 26 days ago)

Just this morning as I went to my car to go to school I noticed something I have never noticed. There were like 100's of shrooms that I guess either sprouted over night or have been there for a while and I just haven't noticed.. I took a couple pictures of them and was wondering if anyone who is experienced in the field could help me with finding out what strain it is... I live in Northern California and the average temperature up here right now is about 62 f.. It
rains on average 3 times a week and is always moist during the night and early morning..

Stems width: .5cm
Stem Length: 1-4 inches
Stem Color: Black
Cap Width: 2-5 inches
Gills: White
Cap Color: Black then fading to gray?
Habitat: Soil, moist, under plants..Direct exposure to sunlight and moisture.

There are also other strains in my backyard and the caps are black.. I didn't want to pick them because they are still very small.

please read the sticky threads at the top of the forum. they will give you some guidelines for describing a find and posting an id request.

from the looks of them, they could be a marasmius sopecies, but this is merely a guess.
read the stickies, give the suggested information, and i will try to id them properly for you.

Ok, I looked at the post and I added the required info. When I was reading the sticky thing it said if it has white gills it could be deadly? This scares me! heh.. I am making a spore right now on some alluminum.. Ill post a pic of it in about an hour or so... Also, is marasmius sopecies a psycoative mushroom?

if you are making prints to take pictures of, you should do it on paper.

taking pictures of prints on aluminum foil at many angles will distort the color.

Oh ok.. I discarded the alluminum and moved the cap onto paper.. I drizzled a little water on the cap to speed up the process a bit btw

if you can not obtain a visible print on white paper, try taking one on black paper. some mushrooms have white spores and wil be verry dificult to see against a white background.

overnight is good, but in some cases it can show well in less than an hour.

just be sure you get somewaht of a heavy deposit if you can, as that will give you an mpore accurate idea of the color.

As you say, that camera isn't the best. Those aren't the worst we've seen, either.

It's hard to tell from your photos - are those spore prints white?

At first glance (and going with a pale spore print) they look like Marasmius, or possibly Mycena. Are any parts of the mushrooms slimy or sticky?

Happy mushrooming!

Yeah.. The spore is defintatly white.. None of the parts on the shroom are slimy or sticky. The shroom smells sort of like rubber? Is there any chance this mushroom is poisonous? Would I die if I decided to eat some?

No, it is not psychoactive. No active mushroom, save Amanita Muscaria which that is not, has a white print.

There is a very reasonable chance that those mushrooms are poisonous. A common toxin in mushrooms which resemble those is muscarine. Muscarine has extremely unpleasant symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, drooling, sweating), but fortunately rarely causes death. Most mushroom toxins are unknown.

Definitely don't eat those.

They are probably some species of Marasmius, but we really need to look at them under a microscope to be sure.

Happy mushrooming!

Sorry, but Psilocybe cubensis doesn't grow in northern California.

There are other active species that do grow in that area. If you check the FAQ, the list of species there for California is primarily for northern California.

Be sure you get spore prints on your finds. The most dangerous mushrooms that resemble active ones are easily distinguished with a spore print.

Happy mushrooming!
