If the jars have been sitting long enough (more than a month), then the yellow liquid is probably some sort of urea-like waste. I've seen this only in jars that have sat for awhile. The cakes should still be viable. If your "uncle's" cakes have only been sitting for the normal colonization period, it is probably contamination.

As for the "glittery crystals," I can't help you without pics.
