10lbs of grain spawn to 400lbs of substrate?
    #21201224 - 01/30/15 10:47 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Greetings All,

Shopping around for Grain Spawn - I found Aloha sells them in 10lb bags and states it can inoculate 400lbs of substrate:
http://www.alohaculturebank.com/grain-spawn.html#.VMvCZmjF_Gg

From reading the forum and RR videos - this seems like quite an aggressive estimate? 1:40 ratio?

In my case I was planning on doing straw with oysters in buckets - assuming I could stuff about 25lbs of wet substrate per bucket - this would mean I could inoculate 16 buckets with one 10 lb bag?  After opening the bag, do I have to use all the substrate or would I be ok, in portioning it (or leaving it in the bag) and putting it in the fridge (assuming blue oysters) and using it up in a 4-8 weeks?

Thanks,

Bob

Use all the spawn at once.  RR calculates spawn rates with dry material and alohas figure is with wet substrate I think.  I do that low almost with sterilized sawdust but not pasteurized straw.  I use more spawn in straw because I make it and it's cheaper that way.

:whathesaid:
2.5% spawn ratio is high for sterile sub, you can go to 1%. It's OK to low for pasteurised straw, 5% is better. Depends on your sub and how fresh and aggressive the spawn is.

Wet weight ratios.
