dunkin' m' cakes
    #2120053 - 11/18/03 03:57 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

i always do a dunk after each flush, i use tap water and a splash of h2o2 ,for contam fighting. i have run into a snag though. when i dunk i use 1 jar for 1-2 cakes. now the problem is, i am getting ready to birth about 16 jars, and will be needing them(the jars) for substrate right after they are done colonizing. can i put all cakes, or many, into one container and dunk all at the same time, or will this be a bad idea. i'm goin full bore here and don't want to stop, but i have little cash for more jars for dunking. so i need some advice on how to dunk multiple jars in one container. thanks

I would suggest you get sterile water and boil it for about 20 minutes in a big pot. Let it cool and then put a splash of h2o2 into it. Then put as many cakes in there as you can and stick the whole thing in the fridge overnight, covered.

The more time you spend attending to sterility, the better your chances of success. Then again, the less time you have for other things. I try to seek a balance. I also innoculate about 50 jars at a time though. I do get contams, but not so much that it keeps me down. I am usually very busy and don't have time to pay attention to too many fine details, although if you do then you will be better off, admittedly.

Well, he said he had 16. I'm picturing 5 fitting into one pot...He could use seperate, pc-ed plasic bags for each cake...put the cake in the bag, fill it with sterile water and then put it in a sterile container and then put that in a sterile refrigerator. He was just using straight tap water and h202 before though...?

Could you just inject some water into the center of the cake with a syringe?

My hippie friend use Zipplock Freezer Bags 1-4 per bag.  This makes it easy to get all the air out!

 oh,  and there no jars to wash.......

I just use the jar there in, I add as mush water as I can till the cake is flote'n then I place the lid to the jar on backwards and screw down while holding over the sink. Place the jars in the fridge 24h and I whahalla~

But for larger scale (more than 15 cakes) I

put the cakes right backin their jars, use fresh lids, (or old ones if contams aren't a huge issue) and pour water in. Stick in fridge, that's it. don't dunk together. One contam cake could ruin the whole shabang.

His point is he wants the empty jars.

Good idea though.

If you want zero risk of cross contamination, use a seperate, sterile bag for each cake. The less concerned you are with cross contamination, the closer you will get to my original recommendation.
