Starting up a Oyster and shitake mushroom business/farm
    #21200293 - 01/30/15 06:03 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all.

I'm planning on starting a semi large scale mushroom farm/business, all help is needed please. If its not positive or helpful please don't say anything i'm gonna do this, its just a matter of time and logistics.

Roughly speaking my plan is to use shipping containers, customized with in flow out flow air filtration system with hepa filters attached keeping, it contaminant free all the time. A humidifier in there, keeping the humidity at optimal level, depending on the strain of course. I want to use some sort of railing system on which I will hang mushroom/oven type bags, puncturing holes in them when ready and allowing them to fruit from there while hanging. If im correct i'm probably gonna need a mister of sorts spraying the bags regularly and an air-conditioning system to regulate the the temperature.
All ideas on whether or not this kinda of system could work or not, or ad on anything would be greatly appreciated, anything and everything relating to using a container type setup and just general ideas please?

note there will be a container for shitake and for oyster, as well as a seperate one for spawn production. Getting a huge pressure cooker type machine built for supper bulk spawn sterilization using spawn bags a shit load at once in there.

This is my dream and passion to grow mushrooms for a living gonna be investing a lot in it. Only constructive criticism please and go.

thanks in advance.

love and blessings to you all.

Hepa filters are nice but relatively expensive to run and I'm not sure they keep contaminants out of the grow room.  Green mold is everywhere unless you're gonna put on a clean suit every time you go in the grow room.

Just a few questions so we can help you along

What sort of climate are you in?

You have room on your property for 3 seatrains?

What sort of power are you able to pull? (AC in summer months could require large amp load)

I second drake's advice on the Hepa. Not necessary for a grow room, and you'll be dumping a ton of money replacing filter every few weeks. All you need is a fine mesh screen to keep buggies out. You'll never have a "contaminant free" grow room, nor do you need one. Once your substrate in fruiting, it's highly resistant to contamination.
Good luck!

Not to mention the substrate for oyster and shiitake (I see them done mostly on sawdust blocks for large scale) is pretty contam resistant. If I were you I would start small though. If you go balls to the wall and have a problem. It will set you way back.

Balls to the walls. :bow2:

Anyways i just started remodeling my basement into a grow room for edibles and medicinals, hoping to be done by summer time. Only thing i need to figure out is how to humidify and warm it up relatively cheap.

Good info laying all around here on this forum.

love you guys.

I second starting small. Check out chefinainteasy's thread about his warehouse grow. Good photos and details. Also, do a market analysis to make sure you have buyers, and an expense analysis. Solarity made a great "shit ton" calculator. Search for it. Some other things you're going to need are: refrigerated storeage space, a spawn supplier or make your own?, incubation space, a sterile inoculation space, etc. There's definitely a lot to think about. Good luck!

Hey don't need to look that far it's in my sig!

1) Run a small pilot operation 1st, you don't sound like you have actually grown many mushrooms yet. Set it up like a commercial op. you can re use all the stuff.

2) I hope you have a lot of money to spend on set up!

3) I have 1x40ft container for sub processing, 1x20ft container for a lab (spare at the moment), 1x40ft container for incubation... and 22,000 sq ft of insulated poly tunnel for fruiting and packing. Plus outdoor space for used sub - which can be a big issue.

Run the calcs linked in my sig that will give you an idea.

As Solarity noted, "outdoor space for used sub"
It will pile up quickly.
