what does overlay look like?
    #2119024 - 11/18/03 03:13 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

my very first casing is starting to get covered in mycellium. im new to casing so im not too sure if its going good or not. its in my pmp but its only been in there for 5 days so im not worrying too much so far. ive read faqs but reading can only tell me so much. hopefully in a few days ill see some pins but i need to know what to look out for.

i bet the mycelium on your casing looks light and fluffy.
dont worry thats normal.
if it looks something like this you'll be seeing pins soon.
if you look closely you will see hyphal knots in this pic.

hope that helps.

yes, that was extremely helpfull.  youre right, light and fluffy myc.  youve answered quite a few of my qs, i just wanna give something back, if youre ever down under let me know and ill let you sample some of the fruits of my labour .  although, i thought that something like that pic wouldve been overlayed, so what does overlay look like?

overlay looks hard and dense, something like the surface of brf cakes when you first birth them.

PS...dont mist the surface of your casing directly....or you will find out what overlay looks like.

According to Stamets, the casing of that pic is overlayed and with stroma on it. Here: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23449

That picture shows light, fluffy growth--not dead, bright, matted overlay.

But a little dead mycelium doesn't equal overlay.

Maybe you see something, I see another thing (happens all the time).
Some say 80% RH, some 95% RH. Some say no need to colonize the casing layer, some say yes. Do you get good results that way ? Keep going.

In my book, anything that's a mat is overlayed. The casing above is overlayed. It won't fruit as well as one that's not overlayed.

It's way too humid, too.

here is a progression of pics.
it's a 2 1/2 pints cased top and bottom with 60/40,the crushed cakes are also mixed with 60/40 and the whole lot is misted heaps as i lay down each layer,no PH buffering was used.it was only incubated for 72 hours.and as you can see i fruit my casings in a pmp, well a veriation of the pmp anyway.

as you can see Semilanceata...there's no overlay on that casing,if i had over incubated it and misted the myc directly it would have overlayed but i doub't i'd be that dumb.
and Micro,,what were you saying about that casing not fruiting well??

show me some significantly better results from 1 pint of brf and i'll eat my dog.

ps...i should mention that these brf cakes also contained organic hulled millet,

That was overlayed, and it can fruit better. Looks good, though. You have it in a terrarium or something, anyway, so it doesn't really need the casing, but the pinset would be more even if it didn't overlay.

"that was overlayed" no,once again i will say"THAT IS NOT OVERLAY"overlay is hard dead myc that will not produce pins.
there is no overlay on that casing.
"doesn't really need the casing" just what do you mean by that?
"but the pinset would be more even if it didn't overlay."
you'd be hard pushed to find a more even pinset.

PS...do you have any idea what you are talking about?
that casing was only incubated for 72 hours, patched at birth and started pinning 6 days after that....it did not have time to overlay.

Micro should stick to growing mushrooms in theory only.
