What are these black spots???
    #21197713 - 01/29/15 04:15 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys, so this is my first grow and I'm a bit worried. I inoculated 10 jars a week ago and a couple days ago noticed alot of mycelium growth in one jar in particular. I checked again today and nearly all jars are showing mycelium but the fastest growing jar (the one I first noticed) has little black spots on the mycelium; touching the glass..:frown: What could this be? hmmm?

PS camera on my phone is bad, look closely, they're more visible in person..

Look closer, and closer picture. Is the black spots and mycelium below one of your inoculation holes? If so it might just be some clumps of spores.

1 week you say? That's an aggresive colonizer then IMO!

Always remove your foil after you are done pc'ing or boiling the jars. Condensation may form under it and attract contaminates.

The dry vermiculite barrier at the top is your filter, away with teh foil!

I used foil instead of lids. It is below an inoculation point, yes. I hope it is just spores. If there are more black spots tomorrow it's a contamination right?

Yep, just remove them from your healthy jars just in case. And keep an eye on it. Molds spreads very fast, and you'll be able to see if black mold or anything soon.

IMO just spores

Looks fine. Remove the foil(hopefully you have a dry verm barrier).

Ok, checked again today and you were right, just spores because they havn't spread. I keep them warm so they're all growing really quickly now and I see no discoloration so they seem healthy. I use foil for lids. I have an extremely loose piece of foil on top to protect from dust...it's an old house. Should I remove that? I used a dry verm layer but I tipped a few of them over (not all the way over though) before I knew that wasn't a good idea...

If it is not tight on at all and just laying on the top it wont matter if you leave it on sure. Only bad if its sitting tight on so that condensation might form under it.

Good luck and keep us updated!

Maybe it's best to leave the foil on then.
