Kit help and learning to grow my own (pics) *update*
    #21190112 - 01/28/15 06:44 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all,

I'm a newbie and I bought a magic mushroom growing kit (cubensis ecuador). I know, they are expensive and all, but I just wanted to try. After 4-5 days the mushrooms are growing nicely. I'm not really sure when I should pick them because, as you can see, there are some that are still very small and other that are already big. What should I do?

Anyway, I started researching stuff to grow my own without buying more kits. I really like the idea and I'm eager to learn.

I suppose I can just take a spore print from one of the mushroom in the kit, store it and prepare everything for when I want to grow my own.

Can you suggest me the easiest tek(s) to do for a beginner in this situation? I only have a small DIY desiccant chamber for when I dried some truffles, so I guess I have to make a list of stuff I have to buy.

Can you guys suggest me where to start in this situation? Should I just buy a spore syringe instead of trying to do the spore print?

Thanks!

Those look very nice man  wait until the caps start opening up to harvest. I wait until the caps start to flatten out a little but some cultivators harvest as soon as the veil tears. Just take scissors and cut them as close to the sub as possible, don't pull them because you'll be pulling potential pins along side them reducing your next flush. I would def take a print or 2, look up some printing threads, there are several ways to do it. Good job man and good luck

Thanks a lot for the reply! Ok so I should just take them cutting with scissors and wait for the next flush?
I've read around that when I harvest them I have to fill the kit with water, then put in the fridge for 12h, and then it's ready to start another flush. So is this process wrong?

Don't put it in the fridge, no need to cold shock. Just cut them at the base, once they are all harvested, fill your container with water just over the top of the sub (you may have to weigh it down so it doesn't float) and let it soak for a few hours, drain it and put it back into fruiting.

In the wild when you pick mushrooms it's good to snip just above the mycelium to leave the 'root system' intact. I'm not sure if it's the same with cultivation however my uneducated opinion would be to leave the mycelium intact so that once you're done with the kit you have maximum living mycelium ready to do with as you please.

Ok perfect, thanks for the replies. I'll cut them with a sharp knife that I have.

The other problem is, should I cut every mushroom? Big and small? Or should I just cut what's ready and wait for the small to grow a little bit more?

Here's an updated pic:

I think that the big one will be ready tomorrow if not before.

I'd personally be letting them grow until the caps start to flatten out. This tends to show that the gills are fully extended and it has had an optimal amount of time to release spores, plus the longer you leave them to grow the higher yield you will get.

Could be wrong i'm only new to cultivation but that's my opinion

Sure, I'll wait but what happen if the bigger one starts to drop spores and the others are still not big enough/without having the veil teared?

I was thinking to get some spores so maybe I can cut just the cap of the bigger one when it's time for spores and wait a little bit more for the others to grow?

Sorry about all those questions, I'm a super newbie

That's cool bro i'm a noob also lol but i have a vague idea in this area sort of.

Mate each mushroom is different so if you pick one and leave the smaller ones next to it that's fine. Don't pick ones that the veil hasn't broken yet. Just snip above the mycelium of the big mature ones. They can grow pretty big if they've got the right environment and sufficient nutrients but you're just wasting your time and money if you pick the small ones bro. Pick the big ones and wait for the smaller ones to develop

Ok so one just broke its veil, and two more are going to. The rest is still too small. What should I do?

I can perhaps cut the first one and take the cap to do a spore print while waiting for the rest to grow?

Ok here's an update:

I just cut two of the big one, then cut the cap of one and started the spore print process. Did I cut the thing ok? I can see blue on the base of the kit, should I just wait a few hours and cut the rest? A few started to break their veil but still some are closed.

I put the two I harvest in a tray with a fan anyway.

Ok i picked them all, what should I do now with this? There are a bunch of super small "pins"? Should I take them out, fill with water and be ready for the next flush? Or can I keep them and wait for them to grow? Should I clean the mess a little bit?

I'll post pics of the drying stage tomorrow.
