Anyone here ever used hay for spawn? Is it nutritious enough?

I know it's common to spawn to straw, but I'm trying to use hay, which is more nutritious, as spawn. First I was planning to try it out in a monotub just to see how it goes, but my reason behind it is for outdoor beds. I figured hay spawn would not attract nearly as many bugs as grain.
I've already got a couple spawn bags nearly colonized. One was knocked up with a single agar wedge and to my surprise it has spread throughout the whole bag rather quickly, it's maybe 70-90% colonized right now. The other was done with a grain to hay transfer and it's colonized to nearly 100% in maybe a week. Both were PCed for about 45 minutes. The agar bag I just simmered the hay for about an hour and then PC'ed (as well as washing it) where as the g2h one I soaked overnight, no real noticeable difference between the two as far as the outcome goes, I can probably post pictures if you guys are curious.

So I'm assuming you just used it as a substrate and not spawn then?

Good as a supplement. Hay is useful for boosting initial temperature is in synthetic compass. Hay contains substantial quantities of carbohydrates which helped build the microbial population. Yet another advantage is the relatively high nitrogen content in alfalfa and clover use at a rate of 20 percent of the basic starting material (dry weight).

Just dropping in an update, it's colonizing really fast. This is the best picture I could get, I'd say it's 50% or greater atm.

Here's a pick of the bag I dropped the wedge in too:

I think it's safe to say it's going to work at this point, the question now is how the yield and resulting fruits will turn out.

Hay is a broad of a term, that can mean grasses or legumes, you run into drastically different amounts of protein between species, age of the growth, if it was harvested in winter or spring... I don't know the definitive answer to your question but, alfalfa is pretty high in nutrition and widely available, you might want to start there.

Specifically I am using timothy hay. If hay is cut late isn't it then called straw? Straw is much more fibrous and less nutritious. I'm sure you're right that nutrition content varies otherwise though.

Man, I just took a look and I'm >95% colonized and this is only 5 days from spawning. If it's not ready to fruit tomorrow then it will be the next day, I've never had spawn colonize so quickly. If the yield ends up the same or similar to straight grain then I'm likely going to do this from now on for sure. Prep is significantly easier (no soak), it only takes 45 min. to PC, and there's way more inoculation points after spawning. I do imagine yields would be poor on coir though, but I don't know, if this works out I may give it a test run just to see, though I don't really use coir in general anymore, poo is just better all around imo. I'm getting pretty excited about this now, not just for the possibilities for spawning it outside.
edit: Oh, and it's also cheaper than grain, even when buying it at the pet store. Though I do use probably a 1:2 spawn ratio or so with grain, higher than average w/e it is.

I let it colonize until today because I didn't mix it thoroughly and there was a big patch on one of the sides that has no hay mixed in it : /. Would have been done last week, but anyway, introduced FAE and put it into fruiting today. It's looking nice.

So are you using second cutting hay? inherently I doubt that it would matter all that much since second cutting has more than just grass it has anything from briars to dandylions in it.

I'm not sure what second cutting hay is, but no I don't think so. This is 'timothy hay' you'll find at most pet stores. If this works well I'll probably try grass from my yard among other things.

Second cutting is coarser with all kinds of stuff in it. You get it at actuall farms not the pet store. But as a side note Someone here used the scrappings from under their lawnmower for a cube grow. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy-grass
