Oyster Buckets - white 5 gal bucket vs clear 7.5 gallon Sterilite tote?
    #21190236 - 01/28/15 07:53 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Greetings All,

Does anyone have experience with using clear totes for straw cultivation of oyster mushrooms?  - If so how do you like it?  Sides bulge badly?, lids dont stay on?, etc?

I am planning on doing a system where I would inoculate 2 buckets of straw substrate a week.  Reading the forums it seems clear is much preferred over opaque or non transparent containers so one can spot out contamination early.

Used 5 gal food grade buckets on craigslist aren't really food grade anymore because of stuff folks have stored in them previously (sealer, paint, etc) - the shops near me don't keep the lids or they get destroyed while opening them (need to be able to stack these) - so need to buy them new - rough costs for new 5 gal food grade buckets with lids is roughly $60 for 10 -- $6 per unit.

It looks like I can get 30 quart (7.5 gal) clear Sterilite totes with latching lids for around $32 for 6 -$5.4 per unit.

Sterilite says on their website that their containers are food safe and made with polypropylene and polyethylene - may not be as durable as HDPE. but should last for a while?

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Bob

Buy some clear poly tubing. Its cheap and you won't have to mess with cleaning out buckets or tubs.

Bob try hitting up deli and grocery stores and ask them to save them and the lids for you. maybe even restaurants. I'd imagine they would be cool with that as long as you picked them up frequently Plus drywall buckets can be cleaned easily since there is no petroleum or cleaning products in them. Even "Chlorsan" buckets from dishwasher stations can be used safely.

I personally use 3gal white ice cream buckets with lids that are free from the local burger and shake place. They use a locally creamery's ice cream and save the buckets. I don't like the fact that they are white because more light gets through so I ghetto rigged some black trash bags that I reuse every time to cover them during the spawn run.
I would look for pickle buckets outside restaurants. They may not have lids and they may smell like pickles forever, but you could place a piece of plywood on top. The pickle buckets will be 5 gal and much more durable and thick letting less light in.
Like PoofterFroth said, you will be cleaning those buckets out, but I do about 9 at a time and its not so bad when its not freezing out. I line mine with recycled bags and then dump the bags and spray out the inside with a hose and air dry. (I hear they make compostable bags now, but I imagine mushies will eat right through them)

PoofterFroth, whats the waste like on those bags and do you just cut it where you want, heat seal the bottom and fill as needed. What length bag do you recommend?

You can get poly tubing in large rolls and any diameter you desire. Just cut it to whatever length you want/need.

I zip-tie the ends closed after stuffing it tightly with pastuerized straw and oyster spawn.
Punch some airholes around the top, bottom and sides - after it colonizes your mushrooms will fruit out of the airholes.
