how much does a winter tent actually warm the area?
    #21098251 - 01/10/15 06:13 PM (10 years, 8 days ago)

I have a 15 degree down bag.  That is obviously insufficient on its own; however, I was thinking that with a 4 season tent warming me, it might be adequate.  Any experience?  I would obviously have to get a 4 season without vents as those seem to not insulate whatsoever.

If money is no issue go with the "Thor" from valandre. That'll keep yo ass toasty. That's the best sleeping bag in the world. I'm into hammocks myself so I don't have a great specific answer on the tent.

in my experience a 4 season tent will only take the crisp out of the air once you have been in it a while. they are just better at keeping the elements out. so the tent retains your body heat much better.

but you combine that with a better bag, and your good to go for most camping.

The trick to winter camping (in sub zero conditions) is to get a one man 3 or 4 season tent with a fly that comes all the way to the ground (to keep wind out). I don't backpack camp in the winter ( although my Sierra Designs tent is made for backpacking ) but I use a cot that is made for a tent. You have to keep yourself off of the ground/snow. A nice sleeping mat is also a real nice thing to have on your cot. You can stuff some clothes under the cot to help with the insulation factor. I use a 20 year old REI 20 below zero goose down mummy bag. Do NOT wear a stitch of clothing in your bag. I didn't believe it at first but I am a true believer now. A piss bottle is a MUST!

If you want to drink, beer is out no matter how you think that you can fool mother nature. High proof liquor is the libation of choice (but could be dangerous). I say this because I passed out after taking my clothes off before I slipped into my bag. You CANNOT get warm after that happens.

We like to take a small hike before going to bed to warm your body up, and enjoy your buzz that much more. I don't know what kind of boots that they make these days but I wore pack boots that would sweat even if you aren't exerting yourself. I laid my coveralls on top of them one time and they were frozen solid the next morning, bent over at the top. I was in deep doggy doo. Solid as a rock. I took a spare pair of boots from then on.

All that being said, the tent that I have (20 yrs old) warms up inside to the point that you are actually "semi" comfortable after a while, especially when you wake up. You still have to slide your underwear and pants inside the bag for a couple minutes to put them on. After you get dressed, DON'T OPEN THAT ZIPPER until you are 100% sure that you are ready to go outside.

If you want to backpack camp in those conditions, I can't help you. Some people can do it, but not me.

Funny story about your boots.  I have a pair of Solomon Toundras and I would be shocked if they froze--quite a nice boot.  Haha, yeah, I love some fireball in the low temps.  Really warms you up!!  I'm primarily aiming to winter camp on approaches for mountain ascents so a cot is definitely out.  I will definitely be bringing a sleeping mat though.

The only difference between "4-season" (winter) tents and "3-season" is that the 4-season tents are typically a bit sturdier/more rigid (to be able to withstand high winds and snow buildup), usually with steeper angles so snow slides off, and they almost always have a full coverage rainfly. Vents are pretty much mandatory in any tent, except maybe some single-wall 4-season tents made of a breathable material. I'd definitely get one with vents. Some/most can be zipped shut when needed anyway.

A tent isn't really going to keep you THAT warm on its own, although a proper tent definitely provides a cushion between you and the cold wind, and with a full coverage rainfly and closeable vents, an inside of a tent can get relatively warm (relative to the outside air) just with body heat alone. Obviously, the smaller the tent, the easier it is to warm up. But we are talking maybe 10-20 degrees warmer than the outside air, or so. The tent is mainly just to keep the elements off you. The majority of warmth should come from your sleeping bag. If a 15-degree bag is not sufficient on it's own.. I would suggest getting a fleece sleeping bag liner or similar, that will add about 10-20 degrees more to your bag potential.

Ex- you add a "15 degree" liner to your 15-degree bag, it should be good to 0 degrees.

Also you can boil some water, put that in a nalgene bottle and throw that in your sleeping bag before you get in. Gets it nice and toasty.
And yeah a sleeping pad is essential, unless you have like a really thick synthetic bag. Cold ground will suck the heat right out of you.

If you are looking at brands, I'd check out Marmot or Mountain Hardware, quality stuff.

Now unless you are talking about like a hardcore winter/expedition tent, with a stove/chimney..  that you can have a little stove fire in... THAT will warm your tent up good.
