Study finds link between depression, brain inflammation * 1
    #21191837 - 01/28/15 02:21 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

I love science. What are your thoughts on this new research finding?

Quote:

Canadian scientists say they’ve made a big breakthrough in depression research with a new study that found inflammation deep in the brains of patients suffering from the illness.

While the research is still in its early stages, it provides scientists with a possible alternative cause for the disease, and an explanation for why between 30 and 50 per cent of patients with depression don’t respond to medication.

Researchers from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto compared the brain scans of 20 patients with clinical depression to the brains scans of 20 people without depression.

They found that those with depression had an average 30 per cent more inflammation in their brains.

And the greater the inflammation, the more severe the patient’s symptoms.

The researchers say their findings are significant, and raise the question of whether getting rid of the inflammation would eliminate depression altogether.

The findings were published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.

Inflammation is the body’s immune response to infection or trauma, and is implicated in a range of illnesses. Statistics show that people with certain inflammatory disease, such as lupus, are several times more likely to develop clinical depression, researcher Dr. Jeffrey Meyer of CAMH told CTV News.

So it’s perhaps not surprising that inflammation is found deep in the brains of patients with clinical depression.

One theory is that patients may have been exposed to an infection or trauma, but their brain has not “cooled off” from the experience, Meyer said.

Neuropsychologist Dr. Margaret McKinnon with St. Joseph's Healthcare said the findings must be replicated in a much larger study to confirm the link between inflammation and depression.

A question that remains, McKinnon says, is “whether the neuro-inflammation occurs before depression or because of it.”

Regardless, because this is the first study to show inflammation inside the brain, “it’s a very important finding,” she said.

Researchers are already starting trials to test whether anti-inflammatory drugs may one day serve as anti-depressants, as well as whether exercise and certain foods can help reduce inflammation.

The research may change how doctors approach depression in just a few years, Meyer said.

“This can be in the three- to five-year range for people to have a new treatment,” he said.

Do you guys think they are on to something big or is it going to be a dead end?

Well it makes plenty of sense.. They have proof of this inflammation in the Brain and all, let's see what the anti inflammation drugs do.  Science is a trip man. Lol cool post..

I saw this recently and went and bought some turmeric. As soon as I started taking it I felt like shit so I cut the amount of antidepressants I was taking in half, and I feel great. Eventually I hope to wean off of the antidepressants completely. Been on them for 10 years.

This isn't that new; the neuroinflammation hypothesis of depression has been around for at least a year (thats as long as I can say though).

Its pretty interesting. It just goes to show how intertwined the different systems of our body are: inflammatory responses from the immune system and neurochemistry? Cool

I read a study synopsis a while back that linked taking ibuprofen every day to less depression. The study didn't mention it's anti-inflammation properties though, it said it was either placebo or something to do with depression being linked to physical pain in some mysterious way. Inflammation would make more sense though.

^ Sounds reasonable.

Cannabidiol is another safe anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant, and seems to help with depression quite effectively.

I suffer if i don't sleep properly. I get extremely irritable and end up in a cycle of acid reflux and phantom hangovers until i use some sedatives or get to sleep earlier. 8 hours from 7am till 3 isn't the same as 8 hours from 12am to 8. Sedatives increase the depth of sleep and seem to help me recover without altering my routine.

I spent my whole life with bad sleeping habits, it suddenly started making me sick in my late 20's. If i had to describe it to a doctor i'd describe it as brain poisoning. That's how it feels with the headache, all you want to do is lie around until it goes.
I'm not surprised at all that inflammation could cause mental problems.

yeah, maybe every time a sad event happened in my life and I got depressed my brain just so happened to coincidentally be catching on fire at the same time

I think when people are depressed it's usually just because of repressed emotions they never fully dealt with, not because their brains are on fire

this article's trash, it's impossible for ur brain to catch on fire. why would anybody think that?

The depression isn't necessarily caused by the inflammation, just linked with it. Maybe the depressed emotions trigger the inflammation somehow.

Such a finding could really offer hope to individuals that have endlessly taken multiple different antidepressants with little to no effect. Things like this really underline the importance of basic research. It is amazing how little is known about an illness that afflicts so many. Nice post Patlal.
