this might be sacreligious but...what is the point to PF?
    #2117992 - 11/17/03 06:52 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

folks, just buy a PC and be done with it  i understand that PF was the first, and therefore is deserving of reverence. i do appreciate the revolutionary work of mr fanaticus, but...

my pet ocelot, bless his soul, has colonized 5 quart jars in 7 days on his first grow. that's about 3.5 quarts of substrate in a week.  if you ask me it beats the hell out of waiting 3-4 weeks to colonize a dozen or so 1/2 pint PF jars to get the same amount of substrate.

of course watch everything fuck up now that i've gotten on here and gloated  but seriously...i'm not really gloating so much as sharing my excitement. if my ocelot can do this on his first attempt then you can too. i personally think that the tek he used is actually easier than the PFteks i've read, but you can't really do grains without a PC. so everyone needs to sell some lemonade, buy a PC, and discover the glory that is grain.

disclaimer: i am a stupid newbie and nothing i've said here should be taken seriously...i'm just VERY HAPPY with my ocelot's success.

The PF tek is good because it works really well for newbies. There are much better ways to do things if you know what you're doing.

yeah, maintaining sterility throughout is practically guaranteed. considering contams are probably the biggest obstacle for noobs....
note that PF tek works just fine with a PC so I'd also recommend everyone invest in one. this way one can begin with PF tek and move onto bigger and better. in fact, when trying new methods it can be a real good idea to do a simultaneous PF-style batch to ensure yields in case your experiments fail.

the pf works great for alot of folks, i guess it just depends on what you are after.

most folks just starting out just want to see something happen and that is easy to achieve with the pf tek. not as many varibles like lyc myc, g2g, filters and all of that. you just need a tub, spores, perlite, verm, jars, brf and you are ready to go. simple as pie and that is what alot of peeps are looking for. also you can learn alot ,if interested in the more sophisicated projects, just getting from spore to fruit.

it is true that grains are the way to go if you are serious and congrats on doing so well so far. i wish you luck.

so is there much I can do with my lot of 1/2 pint jars now that I want to move onto grain?? I figure i'm going to need to go buy some new jars, that are bigger, and have a filter. perhaps I can still just use them to make cakes for spawning...

shwowsh: you'll want to get quarts. you can just get a case of 12 for $10 or so. 12 quart jars = 48 1/2 pints. for filters, use polyfil. a large bag of it costs $3 at walmart.

$80 will get you all the PC you will ever need:  http://www.acehardwareonline.com/product...cb43185d7640d9c

the rye method i'm following is pretty easy. PC'ing wouldn't ad a step, it would replace an existing step (sterilization) with a more efficient technique.

Walmart has a 4.2 quart PC for like 20 bux BUT you have to look at the fact that you can only do like one quart jar or like two or 3 1 pint jars at a time.
