How do you upregulate serotonin receptors?
    #21185505 - 01/27/15 09:20 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Heard <1mg MDMA upregulates serotonin as do medium doses of mushrooms.

What else? What are some recipes for upregulating serotonin receptors? All ideas welcome - I heard lots of running does it too.

If you upregulate your serotonin receptor density, you will typically be more responsive to the same levels of serotonin. That's the appeal - added clarity/happiness.

I also strongly advise you to jump on a zeppelin and try to run on the top of it while it's in mid-air, but ONLY if the pilot and company chartering said zeppelin agree. dmt might. not sure. ask the dmtnexus.

peyote/mescaline?

lsa?

lsd?

perhaps many psychedelics might be able to upregulate serotonin receptors. perhaps you could also contact maps or erowid if you don't find enough information here.

If MDMA abuse down-regulates serotonin receptors because they've been overloaded, perhaps if you found a way to starve your brain of serotonin for a month or so, they would then up-regulate....

Can you do it with just the harmalas and no dmt?

Yup, you don't need DMT to upregulate the Serotonin receptors. Just take a good dose of Rue, once a day, and you should be feeling better in a few days, and you can keep dosing the Rue as long as you want. I've noticed if i dose it 3 nights in a row, i feel quite better than usual and plus i tend to sleep better. They say the MAO-A inhibition itself upregulates the Serotonergic system, so adding DMT to the mix isn't necessary.

Do you have more information on this ? How do you know in fact that it is not the DMT that is responsible ?

The Harmalas are what inhibits MAO-A and raises Serotonin levels, and also seems to sensitize you to things, ime. There's also THH in Caapi which is a weak SRI. The DMT may play a role, but for the most part i think it just activates certain receptors. Psilocybin/Psilocin for example, can down-regulate Serotonin receptors and cause a tolerance, DMT doesn't seem to do this for some reason, at least when taken in conjunction with Harmalas. So imo i'd say it's most likely the Harmalas/Caapi/Rue, and not so much the DMT, though i'm sure DMT does probably have some benefit for the Serotonin system, i don't know if it'd do anything for the up-regulation of receptors.

Prolonged exposure to serotonin agonists (i.e. mushrooms, LSD, mescaline etc) would tend to cause a down-regulation of serotonin receptors through a mechanism called tachphylaxis (google it if you're interested).

Conversely prolonged LOW serotonin levels would be expected to lead to an increase in receptors to compensate for this.

There's not much you can naturally do to increase receptor concentrations as they tend to be tightly controlled by the body's homeostatic mechanisms and whatever your genetic tendency is. This is the basic mechanism behind physiological drug addiction, i.e. why you need increasing amounts to get the same effect with repeated exposure to a drug. Your body temporarily reduces the number of receptors to restore the homeostatic level. It's also one of the mechanisms that makes drug withdrawal a difficult experience

FYI: MAOIs reduce / prevent the breakdown of the neurotransmitters which prolong their effect in the brain.
