Did I fuck up or did I save a cake?
    #21184285 - 01/26/15 11:30 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

So one of my cakes were stalling and growing a slight infection around a part of it. I decided to birth it since I have a few jars and if it went wrong it'd go wrong. I ended up having to amputate about 60% of the cake from either uncolonized or infected cake (about 10% of the cake). I had another jar which is colonized completely but the mycelium hasn't gotten super thick. I put them in a incredibly mini mono(3 cups I think) and put a small layer of pasteurized casing. Well I kinda panicked. If I lose it it won't effect me that much but would this even possibly work?

It's late so im not thinkin super clear but are you saying you have 30% of a cake that was infected with no consolidation that you put into a bulk sub?

BRF 1/2pt cake?
Coir sub?
what infection?
pictures?

They were brf jars. And the small amount of sub i used it was coir.
It was green mold and I was rushing through it, so no pics.

well if it was green it was trich that sporulated inside your jar. no saving it. you'll likely see a green mold run through the sub long before the myc recovers to take over the coir. then again it might rush a fruit and you'll see 1-2 sad mushrooms trying to get off some spores before the trich destroys it all. it's a race, one you're gonna be starting with a flat tire i think.

Well I just checked the the substrate because I was curious and I noticed a full colonization of the substrate. The Mycelium is even starting to poke through the substrate. Is it normal for mycelium to be fuzzy when coming out of casing?

Depends on what you mean by fuzzy.

Pics would help.

I'll try to take a pic in a bit but I'm pretty sure it was cobweb mold. I sprayed it with some diluted peroxide and the small amounts of cobweb are gone now. I don't know how but I'm sure that this mini mono thing is working. It's making what looks like hyphal knots on the casing. I'm suprised it worked at all. I used a small amount of heavily colonized substrate and a jar that had mycelium running through it but not heavily colonized. I'll post some pics in a bit.
